How effective was this act? On the Colbert Report tonight (6/21) a sister of Pat Buchanan said this was 95% effective, but I'd like some confirmation (or a debunking) of that statistic.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.17.129.239 (talk • contribs)
- Well, it depends on how you define effective. If you mean getting unauthorized crossings away from urban centers ("out of sight, out of mind"), then yes, it was effective. For a while. If you mean deterring illegal immigration in general, then of course, no, it was not effective, because as long as there is an economic demand and the human will improve one's situation, persistence and ingenuity will continue to bring people to the United States, regardless of legality.
- Or you could judge the Operation by its own stated goal, which was to drive crossers into more difficult terrain, which they hoped would be a deterrent. But all it did was result in the deaths of hundreds of migrants.--Rockero 04:21, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
