Welcome Cartermcinnis, I hope that you can really contribute to this article. I have seen many students from other online university wikipedia courses that did nothing or minimal contributions to the selected wiki articles. I hope that you are the exception. Thanks. Planned Topics to Update/Improve

Hello, please see the following suggestions we (Queen's University medical students - Group 13) plan on incorporating:

• Antibiotics:

Studies have shown that there are no additional benefits in terms of risk of infection, when patients were treated with antibiotics for one day versus three or five days. However, at present, there is only low to moderate evidence for this and more research is needed. Research has shown that the use of absorbable carriers with implant coatings at the time of surgical fixation are effective means of delivering local antibiotics. Thus, there is role for this treatment method in treating open fractures.

Additional students

Hello, we are a group of medical students editing this page as part of our class assignment. We have compiled a list of suggestions to improve this article and would appreciate community feedback before we proceed with these edits. Here is a list of our suggestions:

1. We propose to create a section called Prevention. That is hardly worth adding. We have a whole article on Fall prevention already; if you want a discussion about fall prevention under a Prevention section here, the correct thing to do would be to copy the lead (see WP:LEAD) of Fall prevention into that section, with attribution in the edit note (see WP:Copying within Wikipedia) Jytdog (talk) 19:30, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

2. We would like to rename the Fracture Management section to "Surgical Management".

Please make sure that your citations are consistently placed in the text. They go immediately after the punctuation like this.¹ Can you try to use any more lay terms in these suggested improvements? 5. We propose to update the sections on Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, and wound closure and debridement. We also propose to add a citation that found that the outcomes achieved when using water versus saline are comparable. 6. We propose to update the Aetiology section expanding it to add more causes of open fractures and the types of fractures that could happen. • Your paper PMID 28134091 on water vs saline does not meet WP:MEDRS as it is a primary source (prospective hospital-based study of 109 patients). Can you find an article that reviews this (and other studies), a clinical guideline that suggests this practice, or other MEDRS source, or do not add this evidence. You have made wonderful contributions to this page! The history section in particular is a joy to read; informative, has good citations, and has a great flow without getting into the weeds. I would love to learn more about poultices per your work plan if that's of interest to you.

For the infection outcomes section, it would be helpful to include the most prevalent bugs that result in infection, and possibly if certain limbs/ areas are more prone to infection. It's very helpful to know that diabetes/ smoking increases infection risk.

Thank you for this excellent review. I will acknowledge the points you raised.

In terms of poultices, included in the historical section is how the Ancient Egyptians would use a combination of honey, grease, and lint (a form of vegetable fiber). I think its fair to say this could be considered a type of poultice, if not, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

For the infection section, specifically the most prevalent bugs, I have now added information with appropriate references, thank you for bringing this up. But for the limbs or specific areas that may be more prone to infection, although the dat may exist, I have not yet found a suitable reference that keeps with the Wikiproject medicine manual of style, e.g. open access, systematic review, clinical practice guideline.

Image re-location/change?

Perhaps the main image shouldn't be too gruesome? I think it does fit the article, but perhaps it could be somewhere a bit further into it, rather than being the main picture.
