As of January 2021 I have reviewed the names from the list at ARTindex Lexicon Online. The review process involved searching Wikipedia and Wikidata. I suggest that names should not be given a redlink unless an article is written as the artist probably has fallen into obscurity. The interface will only show 700 entries. I am working to find the remaining 50 artist (T - Z). Thanks. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:56, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(T - Z)  Done
Thanks, I think I cannot help you with the Art Index directly, but I might find a way around it. I did find that the total of artists participating was 905 and they supplied the exhibition with 3200 Art works, according to "„Onze kunst van heden" 3200 inzendingen van 902 kunstenaars," De Maasbode. Rotterdam, 1939/11/18. Accessed at Delpher on 18-01-2021. -- Mdd (talk) 12:25, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Frederik Schmidt Degener on nze Kunst van Heden

[edit]

Mdd, If you have time would you take a look at this quote of Degener from 18 November 1938 the article in De Maasbodethe :

„De kunstenaar kan in tijden van maatschappelijke benauwenis weinig positiefs doen om rampen af te wenden, maar wel kan hij door mede te helpen nationale uitingen op het eigenaardigst naar voren te brengen het gemeenschapsbesef versterken. Wanneer de belangstelling van het publiek uitgaat naar deze manifestatie, die in zulk een omvang in Holland nog niet gezien is, dan zal menige kunstenaar zich op zijn beurt gesterkt voelen".

— Frederik Schmidt Degener

The Google translation reads:

“The artist can do little positive in times of social distress to avert disasters, but he can, by helping to bring out national expressions in the most idiosyncratic way, strengthen the sense of community. When the public is interested in this event, which has not yet been seen to such an extent in Holland, many an artist will feel strengthened in turn."

— Frederik Schmidt Degener

I don't think that quite captures what he means. Can you rephrase the English? Thanks for looking. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:25, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. If you add the original quote first and then the translation in the article with a notification, just (translation), then others can make adjustments as well. This is not my field of expertise and most of it looks fine to me. Only one thing: You have translate "menige kunstenaar" with "many an artist" which feels like "many people, who are an artist in life." I think the original text refers directly to the group of artists. The phrase "many artists" seems better. -- Mdd (talk) 08:37, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
