Rename?
[edit]Is there any good reason, other than historical, for retaining the name 'Onehunga Branch'. The 'Branch' implies that passengers must disembark from some other service and board a train that departs out on the branch, which may have been the case in days of old. The reality is that Onehunga is now the terminus for dedicated services that originate at Britomart. The current name seems to be a misnomer kept for historical reasons. I submit that the article be renamed 'Onehunga Line', which is what the AT site calls it: here. Akld guy (talk) 04:08, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- The article is talking about the Onehunga Branch, which branches from the North Auckland Line at Penrose and runs to Onehunga, not the Onehunga Line which runs between Britomart and Onehunga. pcuser42 (talk) 06:40, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- I understand that. But googling reveals that there is almost no official recognition of the name 'Onehunga Branch' any more. Timetables make no mention, referring only to the 'Onehunga Line'. Only Wikipedia and a few blogs still refer to an 'Onehunga Branch'. And as I said in my earlier post, 'branch' could well lead the reader to think that he/she must change trains at Penrose. Yes, I know the lines branch (diverge) at Penrose, but it seems a most inappropriate designation that hasn't even existed since the Onehunga Line went dedicated between Britomart and Onehunga a few years ago. Akld guy (talk) 07:05, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- Furthermore, Wikipedia doesn't have an article 'Onehunga Line', which it ought to have. That name redirects to the 'Onehunga Branch' article. Akld guy (talk) 23:21, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose The subject of this article is the track, NOT the services that happen to run on the track. Any services using the Onehunga Branch, including the "Onehunga Line" or whatever other name they may be known by, should be covered by a different article (especially as in the case of the "Onehunga Line" the service runs over more than just the Onehunga Branch) and only referred to in an appropriately limited manner in this article. There are other examples of this separation of track and service subjects, e.g. Wairarapa Line (track), which is used by the Hutt Valley Line and the Wairarapa Connection (services).
- This same argument was had several years ago over the Johnsonville Branch article, and the matter of naming these articles is unambiguously covered by the MOS. – Matthew25187 (talk) 11:19, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for drawing my attention to the MOS. What you're saying is that there should be an article 'Onehunga Line'. I agree, and it's what I asked for above. It should be the main article linked to from all places where Onehunga Line services appear, such as List of Auckland railway stations. As part of its description, it should say that it partly consists of the Onehunga Branch and it should link at that point to the 'Onehunga Branch' article.
- That would bring it into conformity with Eastern Line, Auckland (the main article) which links to the Manukau Branch article. The fact that there is currently no Onehunga Line article is a serious deficiency, considering that it's a named Auckland Transport service route. Akld guy (talk) 12:18, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Template removal
[edit]The template is for Onehunga railway stations. This is a railway line, not a station. Onehunga Branch is not in the template and per WP:Navigation template, templates are meant to link entries in them. In fact this article was categorized as a railway station which this article isn't about. I modified three categories to railway lines....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 23:54, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- @WilliamJE: I did not categorize this branch line as a railway station and I resent the implication that I'm not familiar with the rail network of the city where I was born and have lived my entire life. I first started riding on Auckland's rail network in 1979. From before 2003 I have been riding all four of Auckland's lines at least weekly and often twice weekly. Onehunga Branch is but the southern portion of the Onehunga Line which continues north from Penrose to central Auckland. Services on the branch do not terminate at Penrose (the junction with the main line North Auckland Line. In my opinion, and that of User:Ajf773, the Onehunga Line template should be present because it links the three stations on the branch (Onehunga, Te Papapa, and Penrose) with those on the main line (ie, the stations on the Onehunga Line north of Penrose).
- Your argument that the branch is not a station is absurd, since the Navigation template that you cite actually says that relevant information should be linked by template. The stations on this branch line are certainly connected to the remaining ones of the Onehunga Line north of Penrose. Readers of this article are entitled to be able to see stations further north on the route to Auckland CBD. Akld guy (talk) 20:52, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
- The Onehunga Branch is the train line where part of the Onehunga Line serve including all three stations that are situated along it. I see no real reason why the template needs to be removed. Ajf773 (talk) 21:11, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
- The template links to a whole different article and this article isn't in the template. Make a separate template for the stations on this line....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 21:14, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
