Some people born on this deserted planet?

I find in the plot "Everyone, save for Benteen, chooses to return home." In this science-fiction presentation, weren't some of these people born on this deserted planet and thus the trip for them is not really a trip home? Maybe say they choose to travel to Earth. How does the ship compare to that of the Kanamits?
