According to a recent academic argument, Omortag or Omurtag (in Bulgarian) was not necessarily someone persecuting the Christian faith but particular forms of it. It is also worth mentioning that some of the stone inscriptions from his rule bear crosses surrounding his name...

Kavkhan

[edit]

From the text it looks like special title and I was unable to decide on right dab on Khan page. Please, could somebody with good knowledge of the subject take care about that? --Ruziklan (talk) 11:27, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Title of Omurtag

Here is clearly written his title and name, even a little distorted "kanas bigom" - "Knyaz s Bogom" (from a person, who does not knows Bulgarian, it sounds exactly like this. The meaning is "A Ruler from Bog" and it is clearly understood even today. --212.5.158.246 (talk) 23:37, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, it is not. On six inscriptions by the khan Omurtag is clearly written, more or less distorted, title kana sybigi (in modern writing kanasubigi). Etymologically it has nothing to do with Slavic title "Knyaz" and Slavic term for deity "Bog", however, one of the theories does consider similar Indo-European interpretation of sybigi from su- and baga meaning "(ruler) from God".--Crovata (talk) 20:54, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
