Meijer did not enter the Chicago market until Safeway closed the Omni stores, I have not found a source to confirm this information - I do have a story from Crain's Chicago Business when Safeway took over.

  • It was Safeway did not want to run discount stores of Omni as they did not fit into Safeway's plans. Wal-mart was not yet a factor in the Chicago market at the time or even the present.
  • When Safeway bought Dominick's share by store was:
  • Jewel-Osco 36%
  • Dominicks/Omni 25%
  • Eagle 9%
  • Cub 9%
  • A recent comparison in Chicago Tribune and others at SuperValu Takeover:[1]
  • Jewel-Osco 44%
  • Dominick's 15%
  • Meijer 12%
(Eagle and Cub all stores closed or re-branded)

Crain's: http://chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=18836&bt=SuperValu&arc=n&searchType=all

  • Wal-mart, SuperTarget, WholeFoods, Walgreen's, Sam's Club, Costco and others gained but none had over 10%.
  • Under the ownership of Safeway Dominick's dropped.

*Crain's magazine had suggested that Omni could have expanded beyond the Chicago area, but Dominick's would have a hard time keeping up with increased competition with family ownership. Though Safeway also cut Dominick's Fresh store concept to nothing but a name on the wall, and cut regional and ethnic foods that sold well in local store locations in favor of standardization of the Safeway brands and stores. Safeway does not operate discount stores and favors loyalty cards to general sales. (you need a card to get discounts, Jewel has this also in Chicago, but has regular sales also.) INDIANA

[edit]

Note that I removed confusion of Omni name section, there have been many businesses this happens with, there was no connection with the two and I can think of another Omni that was in the Chicago area. Since the businesses did not dispute the usage of the name it does not seem relevant to post this information.

FYI - the Omni name survives in Dominick's, I might have put that on the main Dominick's and/or Omni site. It is now used for the Safeway store brand of organic foods.

Of note to Indiana residents, Strak and Van Til is moving into some of the former Cub Foods locations with new stores under the Ultra Foods name.kidsheaven 02:55, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
