Fair use rationale for Image:Nuance-Communications-logo.jpg

[edit]

Image:Nuance-Communications-logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image File:Nuance-Communications-logo.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --19:42, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quite right! The use of the company logo is not justified under "fair use" and has been removed. The logo on this page should be the one for the Omni-Page application itself, not the company logo. - Ahunt (talk) 20:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I am a newbie to contributing to Wikipedia, so please let me know if I'm not doing this correctly. I added an external link to a user help/support board in the OmniPage article. This change was rejected by Ahunt, with a comment that said, "If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it." I clicked on the "article's talk page" link and it brought me here, so I have some hope that I'm doing this right, but if not, let me know.

Ahunt's comment said that the external link I added does not comply with your guidelines for external links and has been removed. But I read the "Wikipedia:External links" article before adding it, and I don't know what's wrong with it. The link is not trying to advertise a commercial product, as it is just to a (free!) user group. The software manufacturer used to have its own web board, but when that became defunct, several self-help user groups sprang up, including ones at Yahoo Groups and Google Groups. Seems to me that readers who are interested in OmniPage and looking at Wikipedia for information would be interested in links to user help/support groups (indeed, there's a link to the Nuance website in the article and I suspect that if Nuance still had its own web board, there would, justifiably, be a link to that). I am just one of more than 300 people in the group and there are no financial issues in the group (everything is free), so I don't believe that there's any conflict of interest. It's simply that in lieu of Nuance's own board, this is a resource for Wikipedia's readers who are interested in OmniPage. Regards, Joe JoeWinograd (talk) 23:41, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing this here. My edit summary in removing your links said "Undid revision 487531486 by JoeWinograd (talk) - see WP:SPAM and WP:EL". The relevant part of WP:EL is WP:ELNO which says "Except for a link to an official page of the article's subject, one should generally avoid:...4. Links mainly intended to promote a website...6. Links to sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content...10. Links to social networking sites (such as Myspace and Facebook), chat or discussion forums/groups (such as Yahoo! Groups), Twitter tweets, Usenet newsgroups or e-mail lists...Links to blogs, personal web pages and most fansites, except those written by a recognized authority." Wikipedia:Spam says "Adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed". It doesn't matter that your forum group is non-commercial in nature, we don't allow links to these sorts of sites. If we did then Wikipedia would be flooded with literally millions of links to chat groups, forums, help groups and personal websites because everyone wants to promote their own website on Wikipedia. Fundamentally Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a collection of links. If people need help with subjects like OmniPage they will easily find your group via a search.- Ahunt (talk) 00:03, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Ownership: Kofax?

[edit]

Not sure what exactly has happened (I assume business was sold) but OmniPage is now called "Kofax OmniPage" (see https://www.kofax.com/Products/omnipage). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.158.49.120 (talk) 05:12, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding this. It does look like it is no longer sold by Nuance Communications, the official page is now 404. I'll update the article. - Ahunt (talk) 13:09, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
