Convert

[edit]

@Xx78900: I'm just passing through and am happy for you or anyone else maintaining this article to decide whether to show metric or imperial first. However, I have strong opinions about {{conv}}. There are two useful convert templates:

  • {{convert}} is standard (1.1 million transclusions).
  • {{cvt}} is the same but sets abbr=on (97,800 transclusions).

For example:

  • {{convert|18|km|miles}} → 18 kilometres (11 miles)
  • {{cvt|18|km|miles}} → 18 km (11 miles)
  • {{conv|18|km|miles}} → 18 kilometres (11 miles) (same as convert)

Using {{conv}} is not useful because it is the same as {{convert}} but offers a trivial saving in typing. The problem with {{conv}} is that it causes confusion since it makes people wonder what it is and whether there is a difference from {{convert}} and which "should" be used. Please decide which of {{cvt}} and {{convert}} is wanted and use that. Johnuniq (talk) 02:20, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I prefer the shorthand {{conv}} to {{convert}}, and am probably going to keep using it in future. I will however now change all of the {{conv}} templates on this page to {{convert}} :) Xx78900 (talk) 10:53, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. You might consider whether using a very rarely used abbreviation is worthwhile. The main problem is the confusion due to people not knowing what conv is (whereas convert is self-explanatory), along with the problem that cvt, while mysterious, does something useful and sometimes editors use conv when they mean cvt.
