Name clarification needed
[edit]First it says
"The Ogre village was first mentioned in 1206, called Oger in German."
Then
"The name of the town is said to be of Russian origin (угри[ugri], meaning eels) (because there used to be a lot of eels in the river Ogre) and has nothing to do with the English word ogre. It is said that Catherine the Great of Russia was the one who gave the river this name."
How can it be Catherina the great who gave this name if this place was first mentioned several centuries before she was born? Neither there were any russians even close to this place in 13th century, this name cannot even theoretically be their origin if it was used centuries before their invasion in modern day Latvian territory.
Dubious etymology
[edit]This tale has been chalenged on lv.wikipedia - it is claimed that the word is of Baltic origin, not Russian, no sources have been provided though, however do also note what is said in section above ~~Xil (talk) 16:48, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
