Euthanasia?

I disagree with the plot summary saying that George shoots Lennie to put him out of his misery. Given that Lennie has broken Curley's hand and now killed Curley's wife, his fate is sealed. There is no getting around the fact that they absolutely will kill him and do it with torturous cruelty. It's not that George is putting Lennie out of his misery, it's that he knows what he will endure at the hands of the other farm hands and, since there is no way out of it, he'd rather do it humanely, himself, than to let Lennie suffer their brutality.
