[edit]Chelodina oblong/Chelodina colliei/Macrodiremys colliei Regards, SunCreator (talk) 11:13, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- The name until the ICZN nakes its decision on case 3351 is Chelodina Macrodiremys colliei continuously changing names while it is under a case just makes for more confusion. Cheers Faendalimas talk 16:14, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Name is now formalised: Chelodina (Macrodiremys) colliei is the official name, ICZN (2013). Cheers, Faendalimas talk 15:20, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Name Change and Move
[edit]I have received a request in my role as a member of the IUCN TFTSG that I thought I would bring to attention here as there may be some help this encyclopedia can do.
In many places the common name of this species is the Oblong Turtle. We are obviously not using that name here. However the suggested common name that might be useful to make popular is Southwestern Snake-necked Turtle. This name is currently not used much, except the IUCN Checklist and some scientific papers and reviews, but it makes sense as it says where it is from and distinguishes it from the only other turtle in the area the Western Swamp Turtle.
With the ICZN decision that required us to remove the name Chelodina oblonga from this species and resurrect the name Chelodina colliei it is confusing if the common name is based on a scientific name that refers to another species.
Therefore I have started discussing this with the TTWG to change the common name in the Checklist. I wanted to suggest we could do this here too, moving the page to Southwestern snake-necked turtle and creating a redirect for all other names for this species, including the current one. The idea is to get rid of the common name of Oblong Turtle. To assist those who live and work with the species. This is an unusual request so I am not making it a page move request yet. I hope people will think about and help by discussing it. Faendalimas talk 10:50, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- The common name on the TTWG IUCN checklist(2012) is already 'Southwestern snake-necked turtle' so I moved the page and added the checklist reference. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 19:25, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for that Sun, still should put the synonymy in, but leave it for now. There is a name Chelodina oblonga (McCord and Uoni, 2007) that is a junior synonym of Chelodina colliei, how its confusing as to why this exists. So better that a taxonomy section and the article generally expanded to explain this before we put it in. Faendalimas talk 05:47, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
corrected nomenclature
[edit]Please note the correct nomenclature for this species is Chelodina (Macrochelodina) oblonga Gray, 1841. As per the findings of Shea et al 2020. I fixed this a few months ago but someone reverted it. Etymology needs to be updated still though. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 08:28, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
