Title
[edit]The title of this page (Oh My Pa-Pa (O Mein Papa)) is slightly wrong: Only the first word and nouns/proper names are capitalised in German, adjectives (mein) never are, not even in titles. Furthermore, the English title by Turner/Parsons given in the article is "Oh! My Pa-Pa" with an exclamation mark which does not appear in the title of the page. I'm not sure whether a page move to correct these unimportant flaws is necessary, but I corrected the German title in the article's lead.
I also reverted the term "clownish father" to "clown father" —the father was a clown— and removed "the death of" — the lyrics don't mention death, they just describe him in the past. Michael Bednarek (talk) 08:57, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Removed "Clown"
[edit]I removed "clown" from the statement that the song is about a beloved "clown" father. Yes, the song does refer to papa as a "clown", but this obviously is the other meaning of the word - a humorous good-natured person, not one of the guys you see at the circus. The link to the article about the latter is thus inappropriate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.98.131.6 (talk) 20:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- I reverted that removal; the father was indeed a clown — read the German lyrics. Michael Bednarek (talk) 07:06, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I don't speak or read German, but what makes you think that the word translated "clown" from the German lyrics refers to a guy who wears makeup and performs instead of the equivalent English usage referring to a good-natured, humorous person? I'm sorry, but the song is not an ode to a circus performer. It's a song written by someone who adores the memory of his father as a wonderful, loving, humorous person. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.48.250.17 (talk) 03:05, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- If you don't speak or read German, how do you come to the conclusion that "the song is not an ode to a circus performer"? That's exactly what the father was. The English lyrics (Turner/Parsons) are obviously not a translation of the German words, but that's besides the point in the first sentence of this article.
