I suggest to merge this with OLE for process control.
I disagree.
If you ask OPC Foundation, then they will tell you that the new translation for OPC is not "OLE for process control", but "Openness Productivity Connectivity".
OLE is COM-based (Platform dependent and Microsoft specific). Therefore deprecated as a term with OPC UA (unified architecture)
