Merge proposals

[edit]

Notte Bianca, Nuit Blanche and White Night festivals are all the same thing basically. The waters get muddied even further when you have events such as Glow in Santa Monica, California which don't use any derivative of the original name but come up with a new one, so I would suggest a common page for all those events that are named so, or deliberately use the format as an inspiration.

Which one of Notte Bianca, Nuit Blanche and White Night to use I do not know. I personally came across Nuit Blanche first so I prefer this one, but as this is English Wikipedia maybe it should be under White Night. And other language versions come under their own translation. I agree that the disparate articles need merging. There may be other articles floating around as well. I'll check that nobody might be objecting elsewhere. The merger need to be done. As to the name, I suggest "White Nights", which can changed if need be later on. BrainyBabe (talk) 12:31, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Merge - The two articles cover the same subject, and since the festival originated in France, it seems fairer to have it as one article under "Nuit Blanche". Josh 11:25, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done, but Long Night of Museums stays separate, as per the discussion on its talkpage. BrainyBabe (talk) 11:22, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't thing it is correct of citing the Berling Night at museum in link with Nuit Blanche. Nuit Blanche is realy something different. In the "night at the museem" concept, you can basically go to museum for free at night. And although museum tend to extend their exposition to outside world during this period, things are mostly happening inside.

Nuit Blanche is a very specific idea : the whole city is your museum and you are free to go and enjoy things. AFAIK, NuitBlanche also have two other things in mind : weather is supposed to be cold (freezing) and everything should be classy-like. Classy reference is clearly a hidden reference to "Soirée Blanche" (White Evening) led by Eddy Barclay in St Tropey for decades, when lot of happy-few-people around art where hopping to be invited.

To me it is verry unfair speding 1 big paragraph over St Petersburg night's festivals, 1 paragraph over Berlin Night at the museum and a very little line about Paris Nuit Blanche. Isn't that odd ?

St Pertersburg and Berlin (as well as other festival around the world) have clearly inspired the Nuit Blanche paradigm, but Nuit blanch is one very specific thing. And this article explain very little of it :( —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.192.70.14 (talk) 07:44, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another merge

[edit]

I've just discovered the Finnish Night of the arts. It is a stub and looks to stay that way. WOuld be better to include info at Nuit Blanche. BrainyBabe (talk) 12:26, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And Light night ditto. BrainyBabe (talk) 12:29, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What's in a name

[edit]

Yes, essentially they are the same thing. The UK uses the Light Night name as this was the name given to the first event in the UK, which was in Leeds. Whether it's Light Night, Nuit Blanches (France), Notte Bianca (Italy) or Lange Nacht (Germany) they have similar principles. These have been adapted by the UK (see www.lightnight.org) and seven cities have joined a UK network. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin Blackwell (talkcontribs) 07:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That is still no reason to merge them all. This messes up categories and so forth. If they are really short then there may be a case, but both the examples currently suggested seem fine to me. Johnbod (talk) 18:17, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Toronto

[edit]

I removed three Toronto items: the category "Toronto festivals", and the only two external links, to the official Toronto site and to an article in kapital mag. I assume the good faith of whoever added these, but they don't fit. Nuit blanche is not a festival belonging to any one city; Toronto has one popular example of the arts phenomenon, that's all. If there were a Wikipedia article solely for the Toronto festival , then of course all the "Toronto festivals" category would be sensible. Seoncdly, the official site: if we list one, we have to list them all, in fairness, and "Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links" (Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not). The article might be a good one, but the link doesn't work for me. It is not clear from the kapital website whether there is a print version. BrainyBabe (talk) 07:10, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

City-related categories should be present on this article for every city that has a Nuit Blanche. Bearcat (talk) 21:16, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

White Nights

[edit]

The title of the merged article should be in English, because this is an Anglophone encyclopedia. White Nights exists or White Night Festivals might be best. I would be in favor, however, of letting the really big festivals have their own pages, provided that they are a big enough deal to support separate articles and provided someone has taken the trouble to build one.AMuseo (talk) 15:32, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's a huge difference between winter festivals held on dark nights like the UK Light Night events, and White Nights held on... well, "white nights", when the sun doesn't set in the far north in summer, St Petersburg etc. They are getting muddled in the current situation. PamD (talk) 20:01, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have been BOLD and have created a new article White Night festivals. My reasons are 1) It is an internaitonal phenomenon with new festivals self-consciously emulating the early ones in St. Petersburg and Paris. 2) there are sources that cite St. Petersburgh as the grandaddy of all-night summer arts festivals, and this has an inherent plausibility since midsummer night twilight in St. Petersburg, and dark in Paris. 3) this is an English encyclopedia. and 4) I have left the larger pages alone, and linked them to the new page. I see no reason why large, important festivals should not have their own pages.AMuseo (talk) 16:00, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Nuit Blanche. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it.
