The ntpdate command is useful for doing an initial date/time sync when the local time is too far off of the actual time reported by a time server. In such a case, ntpd will refuse to set the time: ntpdate is then necessary to get the clock back in sync. ntpd can then take over and sync the date/time with further accuracy.
