John Wayne, the uncredited director

[edit]

A number of the old Wayne films have this obligatory "John Wayne (uncredited)". Why does Henry Hathaway need help with directing from some hammy actor? If it were a neophyte, then that would be understandable.
In these cases there is never any citation that I have seen nor any explanation of why it would have been done that way. We loved Wayne in the 1960s, so why wouldn't we want to know he had directed?
