Birthplace inconsistency

The info box says she was born in India, but the "Early Life" section says she was born in Bed-Stuy. Which is right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.93.184 (talk) 01:13, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

I do not know the answer, but it's highly unlikely that being the daughter of Ravi Shankar, that he would have been living in one of the worst neighborhoods in New York City at that time. A correlation would have to be made under Mr Shankar's biography, but I for one find it hard to believe that he was living in this part of Brooklyn (years before Brooklyn even began to make it's comeback) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.125.226.12 (talk) 20:26, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

New top photo?

I wanted to post this here to see if there was any objection or preference. A new image was posted up as the top photo, which I don't think is as good of an image as the previous one. I was the one who uploaded the previous one, so there's a potential for bias there and I wanted to see if there was any agreement or preference before I made a change.

New picture?

I've uploaded a new picture (of my own) that I think might be a better image for the top of this page. I'd like to replace the main picture up front, but I'm not sure if there might be any objections, or if there's a consensus preference for the existing picture. Here's the new one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Norah_Jones_Berkeley.jpg

Tejastheory 05:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Since there didn't seem to be any objections, I've gone ahead and replaced the old picture. Post here if there are any issues. -Tejastheory 13:53, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I think the one from Berkeley is the best photo. The one with her seated in a very dark room isn't as good. Please put the photo of her standing with her singing in the infobox. Thanks. --leahtwosaints (talk) 15:08, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

MOSBIO

See MOSBIO. " Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.)

In Norah's case , this exception applies. Bharatveer 09:46, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

No, it definitely does not apply in her case. Norah's part-Indian ethnicity is not relevant to her notability. She rarely mentions her Indian ethnicity in interviews. This exception applies for people like Rosa Parks. Also, it is POV to only mention half of her ethnicity when she is mixed. --musicpvm 16:57, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree with musicpvm - her ethnicity has nothing to do with her career. Her relationship to Ravi does bear on her initial success, but that's not an ethnic connection: it's having a friend in the business.

While we're here, can someone explain in what way Norah is a "Yamaha artist"? (Note recent category addition.) - Corporal Tunnel 20:39, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure about that. The Yamaha Artist article states "Yamaha Artist refers to musical instrumentalists (or artists) who choose, officially, to play any of a large group of Yamaha musical instruments". I don't know if that is true in her case though. --musicpvm 03:48, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Here's what I think. First, her ethnicity is important- partly because coming from a family where her mother had ties to the record industry initially, anyway, and her father is world-famous, it should have a bearing on her career and her unusual looks. The fact that she does not wish to retain any semblance of her father's name and hasn't for longer than her career bears interest as to why that's so! AND if her mom's record collection left a lasting imprint on her music, I'd be willing to bet some of her father's music would be included in the collection. Regarding the Yamaha artist thing, I find the whole Yamaha page silly. Unless Norah is a paid endorser of their product, she really shouldn't be on that page, IMHO. --leahtwosaints (talk) 15:17, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Anglo-Indian - re: categories

I can not see any mention anywhere of Norah Jones having English or generally British ancestry, American ancestry in itself cannot even in the broader use of the term Anglo-Indian be considered to be equivalent. The term has always referred to those with usually English but sometimes more broadly British ancestry from families either who lived for a number of years in India and/or had ancestry from longstanding Indian groups. The Indian Government defines Anglo-Indian as being those of families that combined Indian and British ancestry and lived in India.--Lord of the Isles 15:55, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Photo

I have added a place holder photo of Norah (her first CD's cover) to replace the one deleted on November 7th. The photo has been sourced from her own publicity site.

This photo is as low res as one can get, so would be good if someone could upload a decent, appropriately licensed photo ASAP.

Achitnis 13:41, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

More updates

Unsure why the {{cleanup|February 2007}} tag is in place, since the article is in a pretty good shape.

Have broken up some lengthy sections with sub-headings, moved a few paragraphs around to make more logical sense.

Also replaced the photo with a higher resolution one (from the same source - Norah's publicity site) to address the "bulging cheek" problem :) that was probably the result of pixelation. She is round-faced, and she is cute - live with it. :)

Anything else that could be done to justify removing the {{cleanup|February 2007}} tag?

Achitnis 12:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Unless there is a clear shopping list of improvements needed for this article, I would like to remove the {{cleanup|February 2007}} tag. Achitnis 09:28, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Clearing {{cleanup|February 2007}} tag. If further improvements are needed, please put a note here in the talk page. Achitnis 07:08, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Here's something that should be cleaned up before the cleanup tag is removed: WTF is this? "before recording any official songs" -- WTF is an "official song"?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.174.43.36 (talkcontribs) 08:16, 22 February 2007.

It's called "wikipedia" because it is a wiki! :) If there was an obvious language issue, you could have fixed as well anyone else. IAC, have done so now, and even linked the term "recording artist" to the relevant article. :) Achitnis 12:03, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Collaboration

Norah Jones worked with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals on the song "Dear John" off of their September 2005 release "Jacksonville City Nights."

She also worked with Amos Lee on his self-titled album (not sure of other collaborations). She played piano and sang on several of the tracks. Amos was her opener on the "Come Away with Me" tour, they having met through Blue Note (see the Wikipedia article on Amos Lee).

Replaced image

I have replaced the primary photo with another one, to allow the use of album images in the appropriate places in the article without duplication. Achitnis 13:02, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Added album art, linked each album with {{main|articlename}} and rearranged a few paragraphs for better logical flow. The touring section could do with more information. Achitnis 13:25, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Timing

The article states she attended "...the University of North Texas, where she majored in jazz piano, and won Best Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist (twice, in 1996 and 1997) and Best Original Composition (1996)." So, Norah, born March 30 1979 (as the article states), was in University in 1996, when she was 17? I don't know how school works in Texas, but when I was 17 (and I'm only two weeks older than Norah), I was still in high school. --Bentonia School 16:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You are right. I did some research, and the real story was that she won these awards while at high school, not at the university. Am fixing the article and providing references. Thanks! Achitnis 10:39, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Encyclopedic?

Is the sentence "Since about that time she has been romantically involved with bassist Lee Alexander" encyclopedic? While it may or may not be true, should it feature in an encyclopedia article that also is a biography and hence should not really have such personal information in it. Nevermind all the broken fan hearts! :) Achitnis 10:47, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Derisive Remarks

Under the Trivia heading, someone put: She has been nicknamed "Snorah" to indicate the unbearably slow, lethargic nature of her wanna-be music.

I believe this should be edited to be more polite and assume a neutral point of view. anyone agree? I know she has been called "Snorah" but I think even that should have some kind of citation.

Pjohns 23:28, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Making derisive comments about a style of music just because the editor has no appreciation for it has no place in an article about an artist who performs in that particular style. Personal opinions and judgments should not be expressed in an encyclopedia article. And the "fact" is irrelevant in any case - boring artists don't make it to #1 on the charts - Norah did. Achitnis 04:29, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Photo (again)

Someone has deleted the photo "Norah Jones world tour Paris 2003.jpg". I can't find any reference in the deletion logs either on WP or in WP commons, but the end result is that we do not have a decent photo for the article's subject.

Can anyone help with a properly licensed, full-face picture (preferably not an album cover)?

Achitnis 05:56, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Okay, so I just uploaded a picture that's CC-SA 2.0 that's from Flickr, but it's not very good or flattering.  :( Someone should remedy the situation. -Rhorn 13:05, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! It's better than nothing at all :) And it isn't really bad. Maybe one could crop it a bit to isolate only her, that would enlarge her image a bit. Achitnis 17:03, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

New Orleans Jazz festival

The article says she performed at Jazz Fest both in 2004 and 2005. I saw her perform there in 2007 - and she announced she was very glad to perform there 'finally' for the first time. Can anyone confirm or nullify the 2004/5 claims? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.253.245.126 (talk) 17:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC).

There are Awards and then there are Grammy Awards

These two sections contain information about the same awards. I love how the Awards sections starts out about how Norah Jones, "has won multiple awards, most notably her Grammy Awards..." and then goes on to list only Grammy Awards. Are there other awards out there? The biography section lists at least one or two. --Born2flie 22:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

This article states that Norah Jones at the 2003 Grammy Award became only the second artist to win the "Big Four" for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. However according to the article on the Grammy Awards the Song of the Year award is awarded to the composer, not the performer, in this case Jesse Harris. Does this section need editing? -- Jeff —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.242.14.105 (talk)

This information was incorrect. I have already removed it! Thanks for pointing it out! The Song of the Year award is a songwriter's award. It was won by Jesse Harris alone. Christopher Cross remains the only artist to ever win the "Big Four" all at once.

She doesn't even write her own songs? Wow, I just lost all respect for her. Just what the world needs, a folk Britney Spears. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.135.187.217 (talk) 16:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Here are the Grammy Award Database links for those interest in checking them out:

Jones' and Harris' wins: http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/Winners/Results.aspx?title=&winner=Norah+Jones&year=0&genreID=0&hp=1

Christopher Cross' wins: http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/Winners/Results.aspx?title=&winner=Norah+Jones&year=0&genreID=0&hp=1

- Lila, in October 5th, 2007 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.17.38.195 (talk) 22:42, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Now there's the same list twice. One should be merged into the other. I say we move Grammy section into awards, but maybe just remove Awards part altogether, since we're only listing the Grammy awards anyways. Griegomd 06:38, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Third album: Not Too Late

This sentence makes no sense: "But with shipment it sold 4 million copies." Could someone who knows what this is supposed to say please make the appropriate repair? Thank you. Typofixer76 10:11, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

On the first page of Norah Jones her place of birth is given three times and each one is different: Brooklyn, New York City, and Atlanta, Georgia! Which is it? I don't know the answer. My wife is doing a radio program on Norah Jones and wanted some more information about her. She found this inconsistency and brought it to my attention. She also thought there were grammatical erros, and generally sloppy writing in this piece, as well as in others I have forwarded to her. But then she is a stickler for grammatical accuracy. Hehe! Wow. How about getting the place where she was born EVEN CLOSE! She said it in an interview before a performace on the Tonight show. Hint: Its NOT New York, Brooklyn or Atlanta! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.174.157.126 (talk) 07:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Care to share it with us or would you rather just be a prat about it?Ttenchantr (talk) 00:17, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

The section heading is "2007–2008: Not Too Late and film debut". It then goes on to mention a movie in the last paragraph of the section as her film debut in 2007. However she appeared as herself in the film "Two Weeks Notice" in 2002. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313737/fullcredits#cast I'm thinking that even though she appears as a "performer", this earlier appearance still qualifies as a "film debut". (for a film debut it's either Two Weeks Notice, or Maid in Manhattan) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.63.251.103 (talk) 16:10, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Birthplace

The top of the page states that she was born in New York, but the first sentence of the biography section says she was born in Atlanta, Georgia. This discrepancy needs to be resolved. Qball2002 02:44, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Vegetarian

It was confirmed on GMA this morning that she has been Vegetarian since age 9, and that she is now persuing a Vegan lifestyle. Could someone add this? Fruit Blender (talk) 12:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Troubled Relationship with Father

Can someone elaborate on her troubled relationship with her father? I think that is probably one of the most interesting and noteworthy pieces of her story, and one that many readers would enjoy knowing more about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.135.163.113 (talk) 20:08, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Very true. Without it, this article is kind of dullsville. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.119.102.66 (talk) 21:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Handsome Band

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't see a mention of the names of the people included in the "Handsome Band", with the exception of the backup singer added later. I honestly think it merits some discussion, and where the name of the band itself originated would be interesting. So.. whazzup with that? --leahtwosaints (talk) 15:21, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Relationship with Ravi and Anoushka

I think it would be of notability to include her relationship with her family. From what I understand, she was estranged from her father which is part of the reason why she changed her name. If someone could find a source for that, it would be good. Her relationship with Anoushka seems good...I heard a collaboration of theirs. Arnabdas (talk) 22:58, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

I think she changed her name for they show bussines... like jack elliott, woody allen bob dylan elton john george michael and many others but I could be wrong for that is important add that — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.243.201.110 (talk) 23:26, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Bengali Transliteration of Jones' name

I removed the Bengali transliteration of Jones' name from the lead because there is no evidence this was ever used by her. She is not a citizen of Bangladesh or India, so I think it's reasonable to ask for evidence that this version was used by her regularly, because it doesn't make sense to include every variant version of a name, especially since she changed her name since to one not germane to Bengali script. Hekerui (talk) 20:43, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing up the name change. The second reference listed for the change [1] says: Meanwhile, in America, Ravi Shankar was having an affair with the New York concert producer Sue Jones, who gave birth to Norah (or Geetali, as she was originally known) in 1979. I interpret "known" to mean that more than it just being her legal name, she was also called that. I see her chopping off her Bengali given name & surname as a career move as was done by many a celebrity before her. Seeing as the name she grew up with until age 16 was half Bengali, it would seem appropriate that Bengali characters be used in addition to Latin at the initial mention of her birth name. Ashanda (talk) 23:34, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
That is not evidence that the Bengali transliteration was used by her. Do we have evidence it's on her birth certificate? Do we even know whether she speaks or can write Bengali? There are many Indian and Bangladeshi Americans who have names that are not European, but that doesn't mean their name transliterations are commonly used by them or relevant. Hekerui (talk) 09:51, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Well I doubt we'll get access to school records or dual citizenship birth certificates/passports for a child, so basically what you're looking for is a statement by Ms. Jones herself on the subject? Perhaps I will drop an email requesting a reply to the OTRS on the question. It really does seem like a mountain from a molehill though. Ashanda (talk) 21:44, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Someone really needs to add info about her new project "Rome" with Danger Mouse and Jack White. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.81.232.68 (talk) 01:21, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Norah Jones' husband

Odd that the article doesn't name him. Yes, she's coy about his identity but it's not encyclopedic for follow the whims and quirks of subjects concerning verified information. She has confirmed that she has a husband, so there's no concern about slander or whatever, and verified sources confirm that it's her keyboardist Peter Remm. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4474042/Norah-Jones-wows-polka-dot-printed-bikini-Hawaii.html
