nonsectarianism

is not religion specific. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.231.127.84 (talk) 11:46, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Dumb Lists

The list of things that are and aren't sectarian seems dumb. Basically every organization ever is one of the two, and there doesn't seem to be anything particularly special about these orgs being sectarian. Jordanp (talk) 22:40, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Nonsectarian means not affiliated with a religious group

It is not possible to be "nonsectarian" and also affiliated with a religious group. Nonsectarian by definition means not affiliated with a religious group. Please see the following definitions from the various dictionary entries, including Merriam-Webster:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nonsectarian - "not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious group."

http://www.reference.com/browse/nonsectarian - "not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious denomination."

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/nonsectarian - "Not limited to or associated with a particular religious denomination."

http://www.yourdictionary.com/nonsectarian - "not confined to or affiliated with any specific religion." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.236.160.233 (talk) 19:15, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

the above piece by unsigned pretty much sums it up. What part of the definition of nonsectarian would suggest that "the organization may be overtly influenced by the Church they are related to"? To suggest this would be false and at the very least, it violates wikipedia neutrality rules. Manning954 (talk) 19:18, 24 March 2012 (UTC)manning954

  • A 1956 amendment to the constitution of the State of Virginia allowed to tuition grants to be paid by the state to nonsectarian private schools.[1] The difference between nonsectarian and non-denominational, ceteris paribus is merely the distinction between denomination (large), and sect (small). They ought to mean about the same thing. To my knowledge, the definition of nonsectarian was never hashed out in court, so any school since has pretty much been free to use the term and take the benefits. The interpretation taken by many United States private schools is that the school is not formally sponsored by a church. It may however espouse religious belief. A Religiousness institution can be non-sectarian. Moreover Religious peoples can be non-sectarian. Stating "Non-Sectarianism" is fundamentally secular is like saying to be Non-Sectarian you must not be in a sect or culture which is false, you can be in a Sect say Irish and live and enjoy Irish culture but still be non-sectarian with other people, same applies to religion. The sources you bring up tackle a religious institution that restricts non-members of the sect from doing certain things which is Sectarian however a religion that does not is not sectarian. Moreover religion is a fiction so there is line to declare what a religion even is. Although Secularist and Non-Sectarian people often share the same beliefs that does not mean that Secularists or Secular institutions are intrinsically related. Similar to how people who believe in the Scientific Method are often Atheists, nothing inherently about the Scientific Method is inherently atheistic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vallee01 (talkcontribs) 18:52, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Is Non-Sectarianism really a fundamental Secular idea?

Is Non-Sectarianism really inherently secular, plenty of Superstitious and non-secular institutions have been non-sectarian.

Imagine as an example I create a institution based off some wacky religion and superstitions and it is non-sectarian is that secular? Moreover I am not religious what so ever and I attend some Church boxing occasonially, they know I am an atheist yet they are not sectarian is that definable as "Secular"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vallee01 (talkcontribs) 18:39, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
