Northern nominees
[edit]In recent years several Taoisigh have appointed Northerners to the Seanad - am I right that they're usually the independents? And is it me or has this stopped? Eoghan Harris may have been a UUP adviser in his career but looks very much a southerner. Timrollpickering 10:08, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- There were no Northern Irish appointees to the 23rd Seanad. Eoghan Harris is originally from Cork, I believe. Snappy56 10:53, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Name of this article
[edit]The name of this article should correspond with official usage, that is Nominated by the Taoiseach, see [1] and [2] for examples. Snappy (talk) 05:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Wrong and wrong. Official usage is not determined by some database; it's "nominated members of Seanad Éireann" as per Article 18.3 of the Constitution. But in any case, MOS:NAME doesn't say "use official names"; it does use "use common names" and "Prefer singular nouns". jnestorius(talk) 07:02, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Whatever is used it's absolutely meaningless to the unfamiliar without "Senator" or "members of Seanad Éireann" in the title. Timrollpickering (talk) 09:52, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's not just 'some' random database, it's the official Houses of the Oireachtas members database. I think they may know what they are talking about. It is also easier to use in a sentence without piping, e.g. John Smith was nominated by the Taoiseach to the Nth Seanad. As an alternative, it could be titled Senators nominated by the Taoiseach. Snappy (talk) 05:43, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- A fair number of the Senators in the "official" database have blank or incorrect Party affiliations, so I think they may not be infallible.
- It's not perfect but is is the official db, no quotes needed. Snappy (talk) 10:03, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- I will persist in identifying strict correctness with conformity to the language of the Constitution, however expert the database designers are.
- The Constitution of Ireland does not determine the naming of wikipedia articles. Snappy (talk) 10:03, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Their choice of nomenclature is probably determined by user-friendliness as well as strict correctness. So, indeed, is Wikipedia's; although the policies we have to achieve this are probably different from theirs.
- Piping convenience is a non-issue; redirects and bots can take care of that. In any case, "John Smith was nominated to the Nth Seanad by the Taoiseach", "John Smith was nominated by Bertie Ahern to the Nth Seanad", etc. would need a pipelink regardless.
- Other things besides senators are nominated by the Taoiseach: ministers (Art 13.1.2); Tánaiste (Art 28.6.1); Attorney General (30.2); Minsters of State (Ministers and Secretaries (Ministers of State) Act 2007).
- Title should be singular.
- Mos:name says prefer actually, modal verbs are not used. Snappy (talk) 10:03, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- So Senator nominated by the Taoiseach or Nominated member of Seanad Éireann. Or even Nominated Senator. jnestorius(talk) 22:26, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- The last one isn't Irish specific - a lot of Senates around the world have appointed members and fill casual vacancies that way. I guess "Senator nominated by the Taoiseach" is best. Timrollpickering (talk) 22:59, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have moved the article to "Senator nominated by the Taoiseach". Snappy (talk) 10:03, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- I've moved it to Nominated members of Seanad Éireann, its more succint, and had been suggested before. Snappy (talk) 16:27, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
