Etymology
[edit]I reworked the naming based on [1], which seems pretty authoritative. Jpatokal 04:32, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
So every time someone says "I just called him on my Nokia", he is really saying "I just called him on my furry animals". JIP | Talk 11:43, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
"Nokia" in modern Finnish is not simply the plural of "noki", but plural and partitive. The plural of noki is "noet". While the form "nokia" from "noet" sounds weird, I don't think it's ungrammatical. It's just rare. I think it is perfectly good Finnish to say "nuohoojana olen nähnyt monia erilaisia nokia", translating something like "as a chimney cleaner, I have seen many different kinds of soots" or something like that.81.175.134.236 20:33, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, of course the above is perfectly grammatically correct Finnish. The Finnish gradation changes (asteenvaihtelut) is a thing you can only ever learn by experience, through many years of learning, preferably in your childhood. But etymologically, the name Nokia still comes from the furry mammal, not from soot. JIP | Talk 18:14, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
