[edit]Hello, I am new to submitting articles to Wikipedia and so I apologize right off if I have not followed proper procedures in my submission of Noelle E. Cockett as the new president of Utah State University. As an employee of the university, I obviously have a conflict of interest. I am not sure, however, where to turn for help in getting a relevant biography about Dr. Cockett written and properly posted in Wikipedia. Suggestions would be greatly welcomed. Thank you. - Hi Wucky, as a user with a conflict of interest, what you should do is make suggestions here on the talk page rather than editing the article directly, so thanks for this note! I think Cockett meets wikipedia's notability guidelines, and as you will have seen, I made some edits to the article to bring it more into line with wikipedia guidelines. What it really needs at the moment is more references. These should be reliable, secondary sources, so ideally newspaper or journal articles (or books), rather than the University website or CVs etc. If you are able to find any of those, please post them here and I'm happy to add them to the article. Any statement of fact that is made in an article should be sourced (including, for example, degrees held). If it cannot be referenced to a secondary source, then it may be taken out of the article. I hope that is helpful. Cheers, Melcous (talk) 00:31, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Some proposed changes
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Paragraph 1: I recommend adding the following [in brackets]: Noelle E. Cockett is an American geneticist who currently serves as [the 16th] president of Utah State University (USU). [She is USU’s first woman president and is currently the only female president in the Utah higher education system.] [1]
Paragraph 2: I recommend adding the following [in brackets]: Cockett,[one of six children, was raised on a beef cattle ranch near Miles City, Montana.] [2]
Paragraph 2, sentence 2: I recommend adding the following [in brackets]:) [She received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Montana State University and a masters and a doctorate in animal breeding and genetics from Oregon State University.] [3]
Paragraph 3: suggested citation adds: Cockett worked as a research geneticist at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska. [4] She joined Utah State University in 1990 as a researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. [5]
Paragraph 4: suggested citation add: Cockett has served as the United States coordinator for sheep genome mapping since 1993 [6] and is a member of the International Sheep Genomics Consortium. [7]
Paragraph 5: need to add a "t" to Cockett
In "Awards and honors" section, suggested citation add for bullet 1: Young Scientist Award from the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) [8]
Suggested citation add for bullet 2: Utah Governor's Medal for Science and Technology (2004 and 2015) [9]
In "Personal life" section, suggested citation add: Cockett is married to John Cockett, director of technology in USU’s College of Education and Human Services. They have two children. [10]
Thank you.

- Thanks Wucky - I have added some of those references and details and removed the maintenance tags at the top of the page as those issues are resolved. However, some of the proposed references you have provided are primary rather than secondary sources so I have not added them at this stage. Have a look and let me know if you think there are other details in the article that can be referenced to the secondary sources, or indeed if you can find other secondary sources. Thanks, Melcous (talk) 00:44, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
