Etymology
[edit]I've significantly condensed the overly-long discussion of the possible etymologies in several ways. I eliminated the quoting of sources, when quoting them isn't necessary to convey the thrust of their claims and where they are easily linked to for everyone to read. I also removed the discussion of the etymology of the ethnonym "Sioux" as more or less irrelevant to this page. Finally, I removed the discussion of Potawatomi as a possible source of the name, because the citation given of Ramsay's "Our Storehouse of Missouri Place Names doesn't actually claim that Potawatomi "Neatawah" is the source of the name. Rather, he seems to claim that the etymology is unknown ("Nodaway River" is one of the items in the list "Unsolved Names" [pp. 118-119], of which Ramsay says "we have no solution to offer at all"). Since no page number was cited for the claim in the article as it stood, I suppose it's possible that he makes the claim about Potawatomi elsewhere in the book, but I haven't found it --Miskwito (talk) 18:07, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
