The film was made aboard USS FLORIKAN (ASR 9), a submarine rescue ship from WWII and not decommissioned until 1991 in Pearl Harbor. There is a photo of the real CO (CDR Disney), real Bosn Warrant Officer J.J. Durant (still living), McClure, and Whitman together over the BUSTARD name wrapped on the ship’s brow. There are still living crew members of FLORIKAN who were aboard during the filming and now members of Submarine Rescue Ship ASR-ARS Association. Mike Waters, former CO of USS FLORIKAN.
