Terminology

[edit]

Aside from grammatical and syntax problems, this article uses terminology that is going to be meaningless to too many readers. I don't know what 'Rs. 19.24 crore' means, and I certainly have no idea what a 'fabric od' diamond is. Clarification is in order.Toyokuni3 (talk) 15:48, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth?

[edit]

Article says "Nirav Modi was born in Palanpur, Gujarat, but grew up in Antwerp, Belgium". The cited source does not state that he was born in Palanpur. He was certainly born in the Palanpuri community.

  • Hindu: Born in Antwerp, Belgium, where his parents now reside, Nirav did his schooling there [1]
  • NYTimes "Born in Antwerp, Belgium, to a relatively small diamond trading family," [2]
  • But GSTV states that "નીરવ મોદીનો જન્મ પણ અહીં થયો હતો અને તેમનું બાળપણ પાલનપુરની ઢાળવાસની ગલીઓમાં વીત્યું હતુ. નીરવ મોદી 7 વર્ષના હતા ત્યારે તેમના પિતા ધંધાર્થે પાલનપુર છોડીને મુંબઈ ગયા હતા અને ત્યાર બાદ એન્ટવર્પ વસી ગયા હતા."[3]
  • Chitralekha, perhaps a more reliable source states he was born in Antworp: નીરવ મોદી મૂળ ગુજરાતી, પણ એમનો જન્મ અને ઉછેર થયો હતો દુનિયાના ડાયમંડ પાટનગર ગણાતા એન્ટવર્પ શહેરમાં (બેલ્જિયમ).[4]
  • Gujarat Samachar claims he grew up in Palanpur: [5]

I think I would go with the Gujarati sources of information, some of the other Gujarati also claim he was born in Palanpur. Malaiya (talk) 00:14, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Alfonso case voided?

[edit]

It seems that the civil case file by Paul Alfonso has been voided by the Orange County Superior Courts because of non-payment of fees by Paul Alfonso. See https://unicourt.com/case/ca-ora-paul-alfonso-vs-nirav-modi-893656 . Can someone look at the details and update the article? Malaiya (talk) 04:40, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is, as of now, just a claim by one person with no supporting decision made by any law enforcement agencies. The related edits are by someone (Thehollywoodreporter ) who knows Paul Alfonso personally, and his only Wikipedia edits are for this article and for Janice M. Vidal, Paul Alfonso's partner. It does not seem ready for inclusion in Wikipedia yet, and I suggest it be deleted. Malaiya (talk) 23:06, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no indication that that there are any charges against Nirav Modi filed anywhere. The only thing we know is that Paul Alfonso had made a claim to some reporters.
Unless someone can justify that references to the allegations by Paul Alfonso, I suggest that they be deleted. Malaiya (talk) 02:54, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All the newspaper reports on the Paul Alfonso case are based on a single source, an interview Paul Alfonso with Raquel Carvalho, a reporter for South China Morning Post, published on 7 Oct, 2018[1]. The only thing that exists is a claim by Paul Alfonso. Unless there is an investigation or a court judgement, the claim does not qualify for inclusion in Wikipedia. I will remove the reference tomorrow unless someone can present a justification. Malaiya (talk) 04:21, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have not seen anything that supports the claim by an individual Paul Alfonso. All the reports in various news sources were based on Paul Alfonso's claim. I have deleted the claims. Malaiya (talk) 07:14, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Use of infobox criminal template?

[edit]

This looks like in inappropraite use of the template. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_criminal states:

"This template is generally reserved for convicted serial killers, gangsters, mass murderers, old west outlaws, murderers, mafia members, fugitives, FBI 10 Most Wanted, serial rapist, mobsters, and other notorious criminals."

Nirav Modi has been charged and is a fugitive. But he has not been convicted yet. Thus I suggest that the infobox be changed.

He was notable for quite a while as a rising and ambitious Diamantaire and was regarded to be a successful business man for several years. Based on what we have seen, his expansion became unsustainable and he financed and sustained his expanding business using Letters of Undertaking for making payments to overseas suppliers provided by Punjab National Bank, by perhaps misrepresenting his credit worthiness and misusing the Letters of Undertaking. He reminds one of John DeLorean who was unable to sustain his venture DeLorean Motor Company. Malaiya (talk) 03:21, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Polical Implications of the case

[edit]

The Nirav Modi case has significant political implications, because he shares his last name with with the PM (although they are not at all related). This should be included in the article. For example

  • " Rahul's 'all Modis are thieves' remark" [1]
  • "PM slams Rahul over ‘all Modis are thieves’ jibe"[2]
  • "How Nirav Modi exposes Narendra Modi" [3]
  • Cong-BJP slugfest over sighting of Nirav Modi in London [4]

MOU or IOU

[edit]

It is believed that he was overextended for several years and used new MOUs to pay for the past ones for about seven year. One of his employees has stated that "He wanted to grow his business, and to do in five years what might otherwise have taken 20 years." he claimed that "If he’d gone public, maybe he could have pledged his equity, raised some money, and finally paid the bank back. Perhaps he would have done that." [37]

Refer to the above paragraph quoted from the article. Is it 'new MOUs' OR 'new IOUs'? Sachi Mohanty 18:52, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
