Why is this the main page?

[edit]

I don't think this sense is used so much more than the other senses, so if you type ‘nip’ it should take you to the disambiguation page. I was looking for something else and the first line of the article seemed to say that the only other articles for ‘nip’ on Wikipedia were abbreviations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.114.146.117 (talk) 01:28, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How is it a slur?

[edit]

How can Nip/Jap be a slur when it is just a shortening of that persons nation of heritage (Nippon/Japan). Should the disambiguation page for Brit list that as an ethnic slur as well?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.169.222.98 (talkcontribs)

Your personal feelings does not trump verifiable sources. --Cold Season (talk) 02:33, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with Jap

[edit]

'Nip' and 'Jap' have similar etymological roots (being a shortening of 'Nipponese' and 'Japanese' respectively). They also have similar usage, being slurs for Japanese people and things pertaining to Japan. In that case, wouldn't it make sense to merge the articles? Especially since this article is short and doesn't have much potential for expansion. Flameoguy (talk) 00:54, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, it doesn't. These are two separate topics. And your whole reasoning is flawed. --Cold Season (talk) 21:42, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They're entirely similar topics, and if you think there's a flaw in my reasoning, you're free to explain it. You can't deny the fact that the words have identical etymologies, usages, and meanings. Flameoguy (talk) 21:18, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(1) The etymological root of nip is a Japanese term. Jap, an English term. (2) Similar usage—which is a bad likening, such as a Nokia and iPhone are used to call people—does not equal that they are the same, as you're just ignoring that there's a lot more aspects. The topic is about a specific and distinct ethnic slur with its own origin, development, history, social context, etc. (3) Notwithstanding, shortness of an article is not a criteria for a merge. (4) And the separate notability of the ethnic slur nip has been well-established by the sources. (5) The article jap is not a broad-concept article for "slurs against Japanese" in general. (6) The co-existence of multiple different slurs for one group is, in fact, possible. Your whole reasoning is flawed and I will not entertain this further, as it's so flawed that it will not go anywhere. --Cold Season (talk) 13:55, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
