hungarian names

as i have said this is english wikipedia. if hungarian names are used within the article instead of enlish names this will only confuse readers. if you want to have all hungarian names there is a place called hungarian wikipedia. there you can use whatever names you want. while you edit on english wikipedia you shall repsect the comunity guidelines and use only the internationally accepted place-names and the english correspondent when naming people, if that is the case and if the respective person is not internationally known by another name other than the english version.79.113.44.169 (talk) 13:25, 26 April 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.113.46.133 (talk)

got my account up, according to hobartimus wishes (whom i am still waiting to provide evidence in support of his accusing of me being a sock puppet). here is what the guideline says regarding to naming: "A name can be considered as widely accepted if a neutral and reliable source states: "X is the name most often used for this entity". Without such an assertion, the following methods may be helpful in establishing a widely accepted name (period will be the modern era for current names; the relevant historical period for historical names):

  1. Consult English-language encyclopedias (we recommend Encyclopedia Britannica, Columbia Encyclopedia, Encarta, each as published after 1993). If the articles in these agree on using a single name in discussing the period, it is the widely accepted English name.
         * One reason for 1993 is to ensure that post-Cold War changes in usage are duly reflected; other (especially later) limiting dates may be appropriate in some parts of the world.
  2. Consult Google Scholar and Google Books hits (count only articles and books, not number of times the word is used in them) when searched over English language articles and books where the corresponding location is mentioned in relation to the period in question. If the name of the location coincides with the name of another entity, care should be taken to exclude inappropriate pages from the count. If the name is used at least three times as often as any other, in referring to the period, it is widely accepted.
         * Always look at search results, don't just count them. For more, see the section on search engines below.
  3. Consult other standard histories and scientific studies of the area in question. (We recommend the Cambridge Histories; the Library of Congress country studies, and the Oxford dictionaries relevant to the period and country involved). If they agree, the name is widely accepted. The possibility that some standard histories will be dated, or written by a non-native speaker of English, should be allowed for.
  4. Consult major news sources, either individually, or by using Lexis-Nexis, if accessible. If they agree in using a given name, it is widely accepted.
  5. Enter the proposed move at WP:RM. If it is the consensus that a given name is the English name, then it is presumably widely accepted.
  6. If a name is used in translating or explaining the official name, especially in texts addressed to an English-speaking audience, it is probably widely accepted."

1 in all the encyclopedias mentioned above the town is named trnava not nagyszombat. britannica and encarta redirect nagyszombat to trnava, Columbia does not show any results for nagyszombat. which means, according to the above text, that trnava is the accepted english name for the city not nagyszombat. idem for the other place names.

2 google shows over 8.000.000 results for trnava while only 200.000 results for nagyszombat. again according to point 2 of the text above trnava is the accepted english word. idem for the other place names.

3 the library of congress does not even mention the old hungarian names of towns that were once part of the kingdom of hungary. as such according to point 3 the hungarian "versions" are not the english accepted names for those towns and they do not belong here.

4 modern news does not refer to trnava as nagyszombat or to zagreb as zagrab/agrab, etc. all news refers to the towns mentioned in this article according to their official name, as such as per point 4. the non-hungarian versions are the eglish accepted names.

5 point 5 does not apply

6 point 6 does not apply.

as such according to the cited guidelines the ONLY accepted names are the non-hungarian names. as such editing them in any way other than the accepted form constitutes a blatant infringement of said guidelines and from my point of view is grounds for a report. regarding the the stephen-istvan issue. wiki guidelines clearly state that only the accepted english name be used, with the exception if the respective person/place/object is more commonly known by a different name other than the english name. in this stephen is the only accepted english name. cheers and have a nice day.Whist87 (talk) 10:40, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
