Birthdate
[edit]Can the article be more specific about his birth date? I guess in 1750's records are not that accurate and Internet sources may not be authoritative, but here are some conflicting sources:
(1) Nicolas Appert was born on October 23, 1752. What a wonderful day to celebrate Home Canning and preserving! http://hometown.aol.com/acalendar/October/cannedfood.html
(2) Nicolas François Appert [b. Châons-sur-Marne, France, October 23, 1752, d. Massy, near Paris, June 3, 1841] http://www.answers.com/topic/nicolas-francois-appert?cat=technology

(7)http://jean-paul.barbier.perso.sfr.fr/acte.png This is a baptism certificate dated November 17th. If he was baptised November 17th, he would have to have been born earlier. Biographies give October 23rd.Wiseprincebambi (talk) 04:53, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Info
[edit]I found the following in Ancestry.com:
- Name: Nicolas-Francois APPERT
- Death Date: 26 févr. 1846 (26 Feb 1846)
- Death Location: Givry-en-Argonne
- Reference: Ancestry.com. Marne, France Deaths, 1547-1907 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2008. Original data: Actes de naissances des registres civils et paroissiaux originaux des communes et paroisses du département de la Marne. Châlons-en-Champagne: Centre Généalogique et Héraldique de la Marne.
There are also three unsourced records in the LDS database that give 17 NOV 1749 (Chalons-Sur-Marne, Marne, France) to 02 JUN 1841 which probably stem from one original submission by a LDS member in the 1960s.
This could be his son:
- Nicolas APPERT
- Birth Date: 1 mai 1768 (1 May 1768)
- Birth Location: Chalons-en-Champagne, Saint-Jean
- Reference: Ancestry.com. Marne, France Births, 1501-1907 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2008. Timespan of work?
[edit]The page says
In 1800, Napoleon Bonaparte offered a 12,000 franc reward to anyone who could devise a practical method for food preservation for armies on the march. After 14 or 15 years of experimentation, Appert submitted his invention and won the prize in 1810.
Although this isn't a contradiction, he would have had to be working on it even before Napoleon set up the reward, and it would be nice to see some discussion of why that was (if it was). Or a more accurate timespan. --Armchairlinguist (talk) 20:11, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
This reference says that the 12,000 france offer was made by the French Government and that Appert won the award in 1812. <ref name='biodict'>{{cite book | editor1=Lance Day | editor2=Ian McNeil |title = Biographical Dictionary of the History of Technology| publisher = Routledge | year=1996 | isbn = 0-415-19399-0 }}</ref> GloverEpp (talk) 16:24, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Death date
[edit]What is the ref for June 1? Every source I can find gives June 3. Thisdaytrivia (talk) 04:32, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Thisdaytrivia: According to WikiBlame, this edit from 2009 by Jpbarbier, who lays out his credentials on his French user page, changed Appert's death date from 3 to 1 June. I'll notify Jpbarbier on his talk page. For what it's worth, the French version of the article says 1 June with a source (see footnote 8). Graham87 15:35, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Graham87: Thanks, appreciate the info. Thisdaytrivia (talk) 00:20, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
