State of Article

[edit]

This article is rather poor. I've done a bit of a clean up but i still think a large part of the article is unnotable, aswell as lacking citations and explanation. --GavinZac 11:00, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jules, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish but simply reverting an edit with obvious merit is not acceptable. This is not a fansite, celeb gossip page or http://omg.yahoo.com , it is an encyclopedia article and as such you have to cite sources.

Don't revert it again. I've already spent a while in the past attempting to organise this mishmash of newspaper clippings into some sort of article. You'd be better off just finding sources rather than just undo'ing stuff childishly.

I don't know what your problem is, but the only reason I changed it all was because you had made such a balls up of it, therefore if you do it again, I will take action again. And I don't know what you mean by saying "I've spent a while in the past attempting to organise this mishmash of newspaper clippings into some sort of article," seeing as it was me who did most of it, and made most of the changes to make it make sense! - Juleskennedy01|12:57, October 17, 2007
How exactly did I make a balls-up of it? I added "citation needed" markings as recommended by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability . If you have a problem with this then you clearly dont understand the distinction between Wikipedia and NickyByrne.com. As for what I've done, see an edit in July, I think, which was a quite extensive reorganisation of the article to what it is today. Even at time I questioned the validity of the article also - see the talk page of the article itself.
(please sign your comments. I'm guess if you don't have this basic premise, then you aren't familiar with Wikipedia.)

Just to clarify, this disagreement refers to the editing of the article Nicky Byrne. Requesting a third opinion Wikipedia:Third_opinion

(The preceeding was moved to keep the discussion on the article page for further reference.)

There are a few more issues here than the tags, but let's dispense with that first. Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to add the cite needed tags, per Wikipedia:Verifiability "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged should be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation.[1] ... Any edit lacking a source may be removed, ... Alternatively, you may tag the sentence by adding the {{fact}} template, or tag the article by adding {{refimprove}} or {{unreferenced}}."

Keep in mind, this is a biography of a living person "Do not leave unsourced information in articles for too long, or at all in the case of information about living people. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, has said of this: 'I can NOT emphasize this enough. There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative 'I heard it somewhere' pseudo information is to be tagged with a 'needs a cite' tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced. This is true of all information, but it is particularly true of negative information about living persons.'[3]"

Particularly disturbing in the current version are the lengthy, unsourced quotes (possible copyright violations) and the claim of taking 1 million euros for the photos, which is certainly contentious (see WP:BLP).

Now the real reason this went for a third opinion (and with no meaningful discussion first, at that). You both went after each other about this issue, rather than discussing the issue. Discuss the article, issues with the article and content of the article, rather than attacking those who disagree. WP:CIVIL

Mdbrownmsw 07:42, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any further objections, then, to me replacing those citation requests? --GavinZac 02:02, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced cruft 9 November 2007

[edit]

Recent edits to this page by User:Juleskennedy01 a.k.a. User:80.41.209.51 et. al are problematic. As these statements have been deleted and reverted and {{fact}} tags were added and removed, I'm bringing it up here. 1) After the first reference in the article, Nicky Bryne should be referred to as "Byrne", not "Nicky", per WP:STYLE 2) In my opinion, the following tidbits are unencyclopedic (as well as being unsourced) and have no place in the article:

He plays snooker and golf
He loves driving, has owned many sports cars
Loads of minor details about meeting his wife, their marriage, their honeymoon, their kids births and godparents, etc.

3) IMO, the following claims may or may not be encyclopedic, depending on facts that are not evident and should be removed until supported as being relevant:

He was voted Ireland's Best Dressed Man in 2002

4) ALL of the claims listed above are completely unsourced and shoud be removed. For the moment, I'm going to simply tag all of this (and a few other things) and let it stand for discussion and/or citation. After a few days without support for the content, I'll remove it again. Job Well Done

[edit]

Well done guys, this article is now quite good. Is there room for including a partial bio infobox, similar to the one for music, for his football career? He shows up on quite a few football category lists. GavinZac (talk) 03:10, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorces and everything. Granted, we no longer have detailed info on what everyone was wearing at the kids' christenings... ;)

Orphaned references in Nicky Byrne

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Nicky Byrne's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
