Unsourced Material
[edit]I've moved the following out of the article:
In October 1997, however, he was accused of improper use of his parliamentary travel allowance. Although he was later cleared of these allegations, he was very distressed by them and attempted suicide by cutting his wrists. He was later diagnosed with clinical depression.
Per WP:BLP, any unsourced controversial statements in the biography of a living person should be removed. This incident was covered in the newspapers at the time, and if anyone wants to restore it to the article they should be able to source one or more references without difficulty. - The key phrase here is controversial. Sherry's suicide attempt is well-known and undisputed, having repeatedly been mentioned in the press both at the time and some years later in the wake of the later suicide of his colleague Greg Wilton. It could do with a source, but removing obviously factual information without even trying to do it yourself is completely uncalled for. Rebecca 05:17, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Agree with Rebecca. We can make uncontroversial statements about difficult, disputed, or controversial events. I've been seeing this kind of misunderstanding of BLP a lot lately, most recently here. Hesperian 05:28, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Furthermore that is a misconstruction of WP:BLP, which states that "Editors should remove any contentious material about living persons that is unsourced" (my emphasis). Hesperian 05:35, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
