There's a chinese article on the Nian. Perhaps this article should link to it as a foreign language version?

年兽 is "nián shòu"; why no mention of the second character? —alxndr (t) 16:10, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The second character simply means beast. You can call it Nian or Nian, the beast. The Chinese 年 character is more commonly used in the Year context, so calling 年 alone is confusing when referring to the beast, but calling it 年兽 clarifies it as Nian, the beast, not the year. However, when spelled as Nian in English, it is not confused with year at all, hence adding the beast qualifier makes not much difference. It is like emphasizing Dolphin Fish from Dolphin due to the confusion regarding the fish vs. the mammal, but when you refer to the same fish as Mahi-mahi, you don't need to say Mahi-mahi fish. You can use both but it is kind of redundent and unnecessary. Kowloonese 23:25, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'm just concerned about this:
"Nian (Traditional: 年獸, Simplified: 年兽)"
Looks like 年獸 is pronounced "nian"; it seems like lots of other articles on Chinese terms include the proper pronunciation for whatever characters are included in the article. So I guess just adding the Pinyin for those characters would fix my issue with it. —alxndr (t) 23:30, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Luduan

[edit]

I found that there is another unicorn beast called luduan. I don't know how it is different from Nian in the look. The story behind these two beasts are quite different. Kowloonese 03:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Why does this article have an image of a Qilin (the image's filename clearly labels it as such) and an image of a Shishi? Is the Nian a form of these creatures? The article doesn't indicate that is so. If they are misidentified as the Nian they should be removed. .nix (talk) 03:35, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Early 20th century sources

[edit]

What are the "early 20th century" sources for this legend? I've only seen it mentioned in books published after the year 2000, usually in English-language books written by Chinese Americans, indicating that this supposed "nian shou" monster may have been entirely made up at that time, then picked up and promulgated even more widely via this Wikipedia article. 76.189.141.37 (talk) 17:48, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
