Ngo The LinhNgô Thế Linh — Per Vietnamese MoS; the requested name contains all of the proper Vietnamese diacritics.--The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:44, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very interested in this RM, and particularly in the claim that there's already a guideline that favours the diacritics. And there may be, but I note that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Vietnamese) is still at the proposal stage, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam/Style Guidelines seems at an even earlier stage of dscussion. I have been unable to find any other Vietnamese MoS, could you provide a wikilink to it, unless you mean one of the pages I cite above?

I'm developing a proposal to include diacritics in a more general sense, hence my interest. Andrewa (talk) 09:36, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the guy's actual name is Ngô Thế Linh; quốc ngữ is different from our English Latin alphabet. For instance, we use Phan Thị Kim Phúc instead of Phan Thi Kim Phuc because the latter is the correct way to spell her name; same thing here. I wasn't my most articulate last night, so I hope this clarifies what I'm saying. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 15:44, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So, there's no currently approved guideline? The members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam are of course free to propose one, but there may be a better way.
But the existing name Ngo The Linh is correct in some sense? This is English Wikipedia, but the use of these accents in the article title is IMO a good idea. See Talk:Lech Wałęsa/Archives/2012/April#Diacritics in general. Andrewa (talk) 17:12, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ngo The Linh would work as a redirect for those not fortunate enough to have the right diacritics and Unicode; however, that's not his real name, and in quốc ngữ has a different pronunciation from Ngô Thế Linh. Pedro Martinez is a redirect to Pedro Martínez for the same reason; if it applies to Spanish names, where the accents only minimally affect the pronunciation of names, it should certainly apply to Vietnamese names where the diacritics play a major role in pronunciation. Grandfather

[edit]

A somewhat odd stub on the grandfather, duplicating the text in this article and incorrectly named "Giao Hoang" (pope) was redirected after discussion at WP VN. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:23, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
