I am not a native speaker, but I guess the surname is some short form, e.g. of Newton?! -- 790 22:37, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  1. I'm really not sure we need to disambiguate these two occurrences of "Newt" as a name from the animal--one's a fictional character, and the other's pretty much better known by the full or last name.
  2. Neither of these fit the common usage of the word "surname" (I have no idea what m-w.com is talking about, unless it's another AE/BE issue, which I doubt). Gingrinch is the surname of the politician; "Newt" is a nickname (or short for) his first name Newton. I have no idea why the Aliens character, whose first name is "Rebecca" and surname/lastname is "Jorden" (according to IMDb) is nicknamed Newt, but I'm guessing it's related to the animal.
