[edit]I am not a native speaker, but I guess the surname is some short form, e.g. of Newton?! -- 790 22:37, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'm really not sure we need to disambiguate these two occurrences of "Newt" as a name from the animal--one's a fictional character, and the other's pretty much better known by the full or last name.
- Neither of these fit the common usage of the word "surname" (I have no idea what m-w.com is talking about, unless it's another AE/BE issue, which I doubt). Gingrinch is the surname of the politician; "Newt" is a nickname (or short for) his first name Newton. I have no idea why the Aliens character, whose first name is "Rebecca" and surname/lastname is "Jorden" (according to IMDb) is nicknamed Newt, but I'm guessing it's related to the animal.
