Discography format

[edit]

I just copied the material over from the article and made a few appropriate notations. The work that needs to be done is to convert the albums over to use the template:Discography list format. When converting the album information to use the template we can place the "frontman" information in as a note. Also required is an accounting of the albums, singles, etc. for the introductory infobox. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:23, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have started. The EPs, remix, compilation, and live albums could be inserted in chronological order. Alternately, they could each have their own section and then the main infobox could be linked to those sections.
Singles may be listed next to each album, and have their own information in the tables below. I have not started to add them. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:38, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Miracles Edition

[edit]

I just noticed that "Born Again: Miracles Edition" is not on this list. Where should it be added? Remember, it wasn't just a repackaging of "Born Again": it contained multiple new songs. Nadanon (talk) 21:34, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It shouldn't be. It's just a repackaging of Born Again. A few remixes and one new track. Not any more of a new product than the iTunes exclusive or the Napster Deluxe Edition. As you can see, it doesn't even have its own article for this very reason. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:16, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Format of discography vs. layout

[edit]

If the concern is that the albums should be grouped by type (studio, EP, compilation, live, etc.) that can be done without changing the current format from the Discography list template to a table format. Simply add headings and group them together. That will allow the Infobox Artist Discography template to link to the different sections. However, the tables are not a preferred format and we don't have to change to them just because they albums are not grouped by type. The table format is notoriously difficult to edit and causes a great many more problems than the Discography list. The only reason one would want to use tables is if there are a great many chart results or achievements that have to displayed. That material is more easily displayed in a horizontal, tabular format than the vertical, album-by-album format that is necessary in the Discography list template. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:00, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The proof of how difficult it is to edit is in the pudding: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Newsboys_discography&oldid=471235309 Notice how there's an extra, phantom column beside the list of studio albums? I know how it got there and how to fix it, but I don't want to have to fix it with every edit.
In short, the chronological order was selected before the Infobox Artist Discography template was added but the albums do not have to remain in chronological order, but there is no need to change the formatting because of the inherent difficulties in using the table format. For instance, the Skillet discography (I work on both articles) needs to be in a table format because of the chart history and the different charts that the material is released to, but this article does not. I've seen even more complicated charting than the Skillet discography, but that is a good example and one that comes quickly to mind. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:06, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
