History

Newburgh was a dynamo. A walk down any street will show that; even debilitated, barren homes were once the beautiful residences of a prosperous city. Most living people are ignorant of the great docks that studded the shore upon which goods were shipped from the ports of the world into the Ohio Valley (and visa verse), ships were built, passengers were transported from Newburgh to the world (and visa verse). Plank and toll roads fanned out from Newburgh, playing a huge part in the settlement of Western New York and what used to be the Western Reserve. In order to have fallen so far, the apex must have been high. The history section of the article is thin indeed, perfunctory, and doesn't impart that past dynamism. The section on just the fire department revivals the whole history section, for gosh sakes. Instead of describing the importance of this great city, the article is mired in recent politics. At least a few pre-1900 historical figures made it into the notable people list. Wordreader (talk) 06:16, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
