Name – Newbuildings/New Buildings/New-Buildings...

[edit]

There seem to be three renderings of the hamlet's name: Newbuildings, New Buildings, and (mostly in historical sources) New-Buildings. I wanted to briefly discuss this with references to some sources.

Newbuildings – how it appears on Google Maps, on the church website, on the physical welcome sign, and on Ordnance Survey's digital map. I chose this for the article's title.

New Buildings – how it often appears on Devon County Council's website (such as here), some other gov.uk documents, and some historical documents.

New-Buildings – only a small number of historical documents, e.g. this book, usually very dated works.

(Occasionally, I see reference to Lower New Buildings (e.g. devon.gov.uk and gov.uk) alongside New Buildings; presumably the latter is some section or division of the former, but I haven't been able to discern anything further.)

A lot of news sources, like the Crediton Courier, inconsistently use Newbuildings and New Buildings (per a Google search with site:creditoncourier.co.uk appended). Most real estate listings use New Buildings, but they're hardly sources worth considering.

In the end, I went with Newbuildings™ because it seems to be the more established name. The fact it appears on the physical road sign was enough for me (photo). I've put far too much thought into this already; I hope the two people who might one day read this are positively enthralled. GhostOfNoMan 00:13, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
