History notes
[edit]- Pre-1930 designations:
- W Winfield-Ilion via E Winfield was part (virtually all) of Route 23-a (legislative route assigned in 1912)
- W Burlington-W Winfield was part of 44 (assigned b/n 1924 and 1926)
- 1930 - 51 assigned to all of its routing south of Ilion, unclear to North Ilion
- 1930 GD shows a "first class" highway across the Mohawk from Ilion-N Ilion
- 1935 RMcN shows it as a "mainline paved road"
- However, the part of 51 north of Clark Street in Ilion (old 5S) is SH 84001 while south of it is SH 5513 - implying that the 5S-5 portion was not assigned at the same time
- The original Ilion-N Ilion roadway was configured differently near N Ilion and used a different bridge ([1])
- 1938 GB does not show roadway; 1938-62 GD maps (38,42,47,54,62), 1961 Gousha, and 1964 RMcN show it as unnumbered
- current bridge over Mohawk was built in 1968 ([2])
- 1968 GD appears to show the roadway as part of 51
- 1970 DOT log has the terminus at NY 5 in N Ilion – TMF 03:12, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
