National Guard vs State Guard

There seems to be some confusion within the editing history about the difference between the National Guard and the State Guard. The National Guard is the dual federal/state unit that is funded and equipped by the federal government and which is subject to federal oversight. The State Guard, which is the topic the article discusses, is a purely state organized unit which cannot be federalized. While the National Guard could be (and was) sent overseas, the State Guard could not be deployed outside the borders of the state. It was created to replace the National Guard but is not a federal military force like the National Guard. The two sources which were added to the article dealt with the New Jersey National Guard, not the State Guard. The distinction is easy to miss and sometimes the sources use the terms interchangeably which can make the research even more difficult; however, the decision to desegregate the National Guard in defiance of federal law is not the same as the decision to desegregate the State Guard; therefore, only the sources which discuss desegregating the State Guard fit in the article. The State Guard did not fall within the command structure of the United States Armed Forces; rather, it was a component of the organized militia of New Jersey.
