Elevation
[edit]According to the CNN article the volcano is over 18,000 feet/5600 meters high. What is correct? --—Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.167.26.18 (talk • contribs)
- Older refs often gave elevations as high as 5,750 m (18,860 ft), but those are not correct. The most commonly accepted elevation in current refs is 5,365 m (17,602 ft), which is given in the infobox in the article. The latest measurements by the SRTM in 2000 indicate a maximum elevation of 5,375 m (17,635 ft). So CNN is wrong, they should quote elevations from more reliable sources. --Seattle Skier (See talk tierS) 05:05, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Updated to 5364 m, which is what the Colombian geophysical agency and observatory, INGEOMINAS, uses. A goofy number had been put in some time in the past to replace what was in the infobox. Elevations for South American volcanoes on WP tend to get vandalized (really no other way to put it) for silly nationalistic reasons, but if the Colombian geoscientists themselves use that elevation, it's good enough for me. -- Bill-on-the-Hill (talk) 20:16, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Bill-on-the-Hill. The elevation was changed to the archaic and inflated 5750m on 25 November 2009 and immediately reverted by me. It was inflated again on 24 February by User:Mateo.gable but this time I was not watching. SRTM data suggests it's actually nearer 5390m but it's definitely not 5750m or even 5600m. Employees of august outfits like CNN and NASA often copy elevations from old and outdated sources. Viewfinder (talk) 23:32, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
Nevado del Ruiz similarities?
[edit]These eruptions seem pretty similar. I'm currently working on that article to FA status, help from anyone who contributed substantially to this article would be nice! —Ceran ♦ (talk) 16:58, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
