False Information

  • AI 101 is NOT a direct flight from Calcutta. The article you cited as your source says so quite clearly[1]: "The passengers will board a flight, AI-101 (which was previously operated as IC-402) and go to Delhi where they will have to board a different aircraft, which will fly directly to New York". The other examples you claim as justification (BOM-DEL-KIX and MAA-BRU-JFK) are actually direct flights (unlike AI 101). The same aircraft takes passengers all the way from Bombay to Osaka and Madras to New York.
  • Your traffic figures are made up. First off, 2008 isn't even over yet, so how can anyone claim to know the figures for 2008? Also, the source you cited[2] makes no mention of 2008 at all.
  • It seems that most of the text for the modernisation section has been directly lifted from the ACEXC page. That is called plagiarism, which is illegal. It is, therefore, being removed.
  • Kingfisher is not adding any international routes from anywhere, let alone Calcutta.

User Jasepl stated that Gulf Air will end its flight to Kolkata on 29th March, what is the reference for this info? Also, Kingfisher is slated to start flights to Dhaka and Chittagong (http://www.webnewswire.com/node/447599). Air India will also start Kolkata-London service end of March.

You may have noticed that I have cleaned up the 'airlines/destinations' section by putting it into a tabular form. However, some things have come to my concern:

  • According to its page, Cosmic Air is currently suspended and does not look like it will recommence flights any time soon. Why is it then on the list?
  • The 'proposed airlines' section has been removed as the information listed is unlikely to take place in the near future and is thereby irrelevant. Just because a foreign airline is considering flying to India, and one destination may be Kolkata does not mean it is a future airline.
  • Please stop adding the 'flight' to New York. Jasepl has already outlined the reason clearly above. We need unity here: if someone has deleted something, do not immediately put it back but consider why that person had edited what you wrote.

Lets work together to make this page much better!

User:Jasepl said that in this edit it was discussed on this page but I see nothing here. First, "The year 2008, however, has been a different story, with international carriers systematically dropping Kolkata from their long haul networks, as a result of steadily declining yield." is unsourced, either provide a source or remove it. Second, section headers are "Airlines and destinations" and do not use a capital D. Look at other articles and you will see what I mean. AI to JFK

Stop adding JFK as a destination for Air India. I have removed it once again. The flight operates "via Delhi" which is an Air India hub and the source states that passengers will have to change planes at Delhi. This violates the WP:AIRPORTS guidelines bullet #5 completely. May one ask why the interesting historical section - explaining how the airport was pivotal in international air history - vanished? Also, is Kolkata no longer considered, within India, one of its great cities? That seems to be reflected in the sudden, very recent resurgence & withdrawal of international air services. Editing Questions

Thanks to everyone who is working to make this article accurate and free from those horrible IP edits. Just three things I was wondering:

  • It it true that MDLR Airlines has axed flights to Kolkata? The airline's website and wikipedia article both say that the flights are still going. Any proof of their ceasing?
  • The 'passenger traffic' section with the graph was been deemed as 'no longer necessary' and has been deleted. It contained some useful information, I'd call it useful..
  • The history section was a deleted a month or so ago because of lack of sources. Mabye someone could make one, even a simpler one, with some sources? Most airport pages have a history section, so Kolkata should too.

AI To London from March 29

According to [3], AI will recommence Kolkata - London flights after BA leaves. However, just like the JFK flight it will require a change in aircraft in Delhi so is not a direct flight. Jet Konnect

These are not new flights. Existing 'mainline' flights from Calcutta to Bangalore, Jorhat, Gauhati and Agartala are going to be operated by reconfigured aircraft, etc. It’s just a different class of service being offered by an existing airline; no new airline is being created, no new flights, routes or frequencies. Quite on the lines of ‘Dedicate’ by Air France.

Deccan / Red’s recent integration into ‘mainline’ Kingfisher is a good example for comparison, where the DN code disappeared, the Air Deccan legal entity is gone and Red is now just a different class of service. And an effort is underway to merge all articles and destination lists for Red into the Kingfisher article.

AIR INDIA operates flights from Kolkata to LONDON (AI 111, AI 112) and NEW YORK (AI 101, AI 102) via New Delhi. These are very important long haul flights that connect these important destinations. The AI111 and AI101 involve NO CHANGE OF AIRCRAFT, with stops in New Delhi, some people here are being ignorant and giving false info. These are direct flights from Kolkata and should be listed as AI destinations. Just to sight all of you some more articles regarding the launch of the new KOLKATA WASHINTON direct flight:

It would, if it were the same aircraft all the way through. Turns out, it isn't: an Indian Airlines 320-type flies CCU-DEL and an Air India 77L flies DEL-JFK-IAD. So, no, JFK/IAD are not direct destinations from Calcutta. And neither is LHR. Jasepl (talk) 12:43, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AI 111 & 112 CCU to LHR and return

I haven't edited the article, due to the note written. I know that this route has been argued about on wikipedia recently, and that proof from the Air India website will probably not be accepted. However, I do have proof from the website of Heathrow Airport. According to Heathrow airport it is a continuous flight number that does not require a change of aircraft, however there is one stop in New Delhi. I'm sure that BAA Heathrow Airport will have the correct information. [8] [9] This information is also supported by Expedia India, if you were to search a flight from Kolkata to London, it shows options to connect in Delhi and Mumbai for Air India flights, but also a 1 stop (not connection, just 1 stop) flight AI111 Kolkata to London. It is a continuous flight number, and therefore should be added to the page. I am not sure of the JFK route that has also been put as not to be added. If anyone wants any more evidence other than Heathrow Airport, Air India or Expedia, I am willing to find some. --MJLRGS (talk) 14:43, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Air India does not fly to Kolkata. Although the flight AI 111/112 is designated as a Kolkata-Delhi-London direct flight, it flown on an A321 on the Kolkata-Delhi route and on a 777-200LR on the Delhi-London route. Ergo, AI does not fly to Kolkata an the Kolkata-Delhi sector of flight AI 111/112 is flown on an A321 which Indian Airlines owns. Per the concensus at WP:AIRPORTS, we list only the operating carriers and not carriers placing their codes on other carrier aircraft. Hence the row AI op by IC for Delhi. Why so serious? However, BAA Heathrow website classifies this route as not a non-stop flight, but still a direct flight, as does Expedia, And a direct flight is one that doesn't require a change of aircraft, which would be listed. However, the Air India website is rather confusing however, and although it markets it as a direct route, it states JET as Aircraft for A112 London to Kolkata, but B777 on A112 London to New Delhi. It states A321 on the Indian flight from Delhi to Kolkata, but not the one marketed from London to Kolkata, and also one with a different time. The Indian Airlines website also claims that some flights are operated by their subsidary, but others by Air India itself, one of which is claimed by Expedia to be the flight originating from London. Indian airlines website gives schedules/bookings only for domestic flights be it AI or IC or CD coded. Air India website gives schedules/bookings for international flights operated both by AI and IC. You cannot book an international flight by IC on the IC website, you'll have to do it on AI website. On the AI schedule, it shows the aircraft as JET because the flight is flown using two different aircraft. Had it been the same aircraft all the way from Kolkata to London, it would have been the aircraft in specific. BTW, AI is not a subsidiary if Indian. Sorry, I meant the subsidary, not their subsidary. Thank you f0r explaining about the JET, however, it still doesn't answer why it is specified as a direct route on the Heathrow website, or expedia. On Heathrow website, it only shows destinations that don't require any change of plane when you select direct only, yet Kolkata by AI112 still shows up as a destination, and if there was a change of plane then expedia would specify 'Connect in New Delhi Indira Gandhi' rather than '1 Stop', as do many other travel websites. --MJLRGS (talk) 16:27, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well that may solely be due to the fact that AI has given the same flight no for two legs of journey operated by two different aircraft. Infact even if you book from CCU to LHR on AI website, it does not retrieve the booking (on AI 111) as made on two different flights but rather on a single flight. Why so serious? The confusion is probably due to Air India doing as you say, as in many parts of the world it has to be the same aircraft to operate the same flight number, but it does happen otherwise in other parts of the world that may include India. I'm not completely sure. If there is confusion then the destinations list shouldn't be changed, as wikipedia may lack information, but should not be allowed to have false information. Unless of course, someone has who actually flown on the flight or an aviation official has something to say about it, but otherwise, the LHR route shouldn't be added as specified, and I won't. --MJLRGS (talk) 21:17, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for Move

I, Avenue X at Cicero (talk · contribs) have recently moved this page to Dum Dum Airport, abiding by the policy on Wikipedia of using common names. As you can see from this Google search "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport" generates 290,000 results; "dum dum airport" generates 1,420,000 results; "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport" without Dum Dum generates 237,000 results; and "Dum Dum Airport" without "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International" generates 673,000 results. And this ngram, clears further doubts, if any. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 20:52, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:COMMONNAME cannot be applied here. Per the Airports Authority of India, [11], the name is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International. Dum Dum Airport is an old name of the airport. If you apply the WP:COMMONNAME policy here, then Rajiv Gandhi International Airport will have to be renamed as Hyderabad International Airport and Bengaluru International Airport to Bangalore International Airport. These present names of the articles cannot be renamed to the so-called common name using WP:UCN coz as per official records, they are called by these names. Could you please explain how WP:COMMONNAME is not applicable here? Obviously the AAI refers to it as Netaji... airport. It is the official name. Every governmental website refers to them as the official names. If you can find enough proof (like the ones I submitted above) that "Rajiv Gandhi International Airport will have to be renamed as Hyderabad International Airport and Bengaluru International Airport to Bangalore International Airport", move them! I said if you consider your reasoning here, then Rajiv Gandhi International Airport will have to be moved to Hyderabad International Airport and Bengaluru International Airport to Bangalore International Airport, and same is the case with Chennai International Airport although Anna International Airport shows more ghits, but it is inappropriate. All airport articles in wikipedia are named per their official name and Dum Dum Airport is an old name of the airport as mentioned earlier. I'm afraid not. The move wasn't unilateral. I had the page (Dum Dum Airport) deleted as CSD G6. G6. Technical deletions.: Uncontroversial maintenance, such as deleting dated maintenance categories, deleting unnecessary disambiguation pages, or performing uncontroversial page moves. This also includes pages unambiguously created in error and/or in the incorrect namespace. If no special tag like {{db-move}} can be used and the reason for deletion is not self-evident, a reason for deletion should be supplied on the talk page or in the edit summary. Though I strongly oppose this move, Abhishek's rationale is not really accurate. Allow me to modify his rationale a bit. WP:GOOGLE has to be applied very cautiously. NSCB was renamed not very long ago, and obviously historical sources will tend towards mentioning Dum Dum. Check out Google News (where Airport info is commonly available), and AAI sites. They are the best indicators, and not books or web articles, which contain info right from the 1950s and colonial times. Lynch7 16:33, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And to add to it, when any airport is renamed (which it is allowed to), the government of the country where the airport belongs to has to inform both IATA and ICAO. New terminal and modernisation

As per media reports, all the airlines will move to the new integrated terminal by 15 March 2013. After that the old domestic and international terminal will not be in use, except for Hajj passengers. I propose that Modernisation and Airport structure should be merged appropriately to give correct information to the common people. New Terminal and Pictures

Though this is just a suggestion, I also noticed the lack of pictures of the new airport terminal. All the pictures currently only show the old terminals or the tarmac near the old terminals. I believe it would be beneficial if someone could add more images to the page regarding the new terminal to update the article. The picture of the international terminal in the top of the page should also be removed as it makes the reader think that the two old terminals are still in operation. Once again, this is just a suggestion, but I though that maybe we should bring the picture gallery back. I was viewing the edit history of this page and I noticed that some excellent pictures of the Departures section of the new terminal had been posted by one of our seemingly new fellow users, Rajdeep86041. They were apparently later remove because there were too many. I noticed that they were all original works and properly copyrighted. I was thinking that maybe we could either incorporate them into different parts of the article or, put them in a new picture gallery, as thumbnails, to save space and keep everything organized. Agree about the website, but am unsure about Rajdeep86041's images. They have been taken from this Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68476094@N06/with/8566186246/#photo_8566186246 and have no copyright licence from there. It is possible that the user made the pictures and uploaded them to both Flckr and Wikimedia, but given that the user also attempted to add copyrighted images from http://www.rediff.com/business/slide-show/slide-show-1-spectacular-images-of-revamped-kolkata-airport/20130129.htm#6 whilst claiming it as their own work, it seems unlikely. Distinction Between Sections

As the new terminal is divided into two parts, (Domestic - Gates 1 to 3) and (International - Gates 4 to 5), should this be noted and and used to organize information in the Airlines and Destinations table? I have not been into the new terminal, can any one say if there is any segregation or entry restriction between the two parts? If there is no such restrictions, I think usage of these gate numbers will confuse people into believing that there is a segregation. Kindly clarify. It seems that this is not common practice for single-terminal airports. Consider the wikipedia pages for Hyderabad and Bangalore airports - no distinction bas been made between international and domestic.Jer.dv (talk) 21:06, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, as far as I am aware, only 5 aerobridges have been delivered by the Malaysian firm delivering these, so that's the reason the airport is using only 5 of the gates. The capacity is around 18 or 19 gates. Isn't it so ? Vistaindia (talk) 23:41, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By gates I was referring to entry gates into the terminal. The Indonesian firm, as far as I know, has delivered 12 of the 18 aerobridges. However, as Jer.dv said, I noticed that there is little to no distinction in other one terminal airports and thus, I agree that this change is most probably unnecessary. The Kolkata airport launched it's new website on August 15. I had made the corresponding changes to the article and it was reverted once. The site kolkatainternationalairport.com seems dubious to me. Firstly, a check on Whois.com [12] reveals the site is not registered to its operator, AAI (as it should be).
For example: The official website of Delhi Airport is owned by its operator DIAL [13] and the official website of Mumbai Airport is owned by its operator MIAL [14].
In Addition, the Main Airports Authority of India website does not link to this "new" website from its "all airports" page as it does for other airports of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kochi etc. that have their own website. As such, we should be slow in placing a link to this site and adopting the Logo displayed in it until we can give sufficient proof of its authenticity. If this is indeed a new development we should wait till AAI links to this new site.
Also, Why is there only one mention in the press about the website? We may need to get consensus wether we can include the logo and website purely on the basis of a newspaper article. Trinidade (talk) 04:35, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I want to start a discussion on which image to be kept in the infobox. The previous photo was this one: File:NSCBI International airport.jpg. This shows the whole terminal building of the airport. User:Adityabill2001 has replaced it with other images File:Kolkata NSCBI Airport.jpg and File:Kolkata NSCBI Airport P2.jpg which shows the post-security area and boarding areas respectively. I moved the this to the Terminal section in the body. Later Adityabill added this the infobox, replacing this. I don't have any problem with any of the images and none of them are mine.
