Similarity to Windows registry
[edit]Is this concept similar to that of Windows Registry? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Soumyasch (talk • contribs) .
- I took that statement out because I thought it was misleading. AFAIK, the only thing in common is it’s a central repository of usernames, groups, and related info (see the Data section)—whereas Windows tries to store everything in there. But open to discussing this. Barefootguru 18:09, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- I remember discussing that with a bunch of NeXT-diehards at WWDC one year, and consensus was that the Registry along with a few other features of later Windows were indeed "inspired" by features in NeXTSTEP. I don't know of a reference for that though, and wouldn't want to add it in without better confirmation.
- NetInfo's only similarity to the Windows registry is that both are used to store administrative information. The Windows Registry is per-host, and rather primitive. NetInfo was a distributed, hierarchical database, with provisions for redundancy and automatic synchronization between domains. i know of one installation where a network of four thousand NeXT computers were administered by only five full-time system administrators. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.6.157.14 (talk) 02:16, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

broken link (under heading External Links)
[edit]At the bottom of this NetInfo page, under the heading "External Links", this link to man pages is broken (gives 404 code):
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/netinfo.5.html
I do not know how to fix this (and there might be lots of other broken links to old man pages??) 174.24.127.150 (talk) 20:19, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
