Allusion to the Iliad
[edit]Not all scholars think that the Pithekoussai inscription alludes to the Iliad. As Jonathan Burgess puts it, "a reference to Nestor's cup is not necessarily a reference to Iliad 11.632-637, for Nestor's cup could have existed in mythology independently of Homer..." (The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle, 114). For a more detailed objection, see this book review of The Returns of Odysseus. I changed some parts of the article to reflect this scholarly opinion, and will probably add a bit more soon. Akhilleus 07:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Please add more. It seems that there is controversy about whether the "Mask of Agamemnon' is a fake, planted by Schliemann -- are there comparable allegations about this artifact? Wastrel Way (talk) 14:57, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Correct category?

Where ?
[edit]The third cup listed as "A clay drinking vessel of the 8th century BC found at Pithekoussai, Magna Graecia, which bears a famous inscription calling itself Nestor's cup."
was supposedly found on the island Ischia near Naples. It would appear that Ischia isn't really within the scope of Magna Graecia as defined.Eregli bob (talk) 23:38, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- Guess you got a point there. "Magna Graecia" is not the most reader-friendly descriptor; people just won't know what it is. I've changed it to "Pithekoussai, Ischia (Italy)". Fut.Perf. ☼ 07:20, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
