Founded in the early 1900's the village of Nemacolin lies in Cumberland township, about 4 miles from Carmichaels borough. The name Nemacolin is after a native American Indian chief, for many years Nemacolin Mine a coal mine was the mainindustry in the area. The coal company owned the supply store along with most all the houses built in the village, toe coal company even operated a movie theater in the village and doctor's office. As time went on the unionization of most mining companies, the houses were sold off by the coal company as was the union store. In the 1980's the mine went out of operation and so did the village store and swimming pool and playground. The area is served by the Cumberland Township Police Department and has it's own volunteer fire department, a union hall for the UMWA, a bar, two churchs still operate in the village along with a few private businesses —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.79.10.117 (talk) 19:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
