drink

More detail on Negus, the drink: According to Malone (Life of Dryden, Prose Work.i - p. 484) this drink was invented by a British Colonel at the British royal court, Francis Negus (commissioner for executing the office of master of the horse from 1717 to 1727, then master of the buckhounds, died 1732)

Main meaning(s)

If Negus, the ruler, is not the main meaning, Negus should redirect here, and not to Emperor of Ethiopia. Actually, in that case, this page shouldn't even exist and Negus should be the disambiguation page. --Usgnus 15:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

It's actually a bit of a canundrum: there are THREE meanings, and two ways to judge their importance, quantitative versus qualitative:
  • the drink, unrelated to the other two, is a correct but insignificant meaning
  • the most common use is the INcorrect one: Negus instead of Negus negorum, itself a latinization, which may probably best keep referring to Emperor of Ethiopia
  • the only significant correct use, but still relatively rare in Western languages, is for 'second rank' Ethiopian 'regional' office-holders, either princely vassal (local dynasty) or (yet possibly of the imperial blood) gubernatorial, before or under authority of the Empire; so indeed, Negus should not just refer to the Emperor, but have its own article- at present, there is unfortunately very little material, so it would be quite stubbish, but go ahead Fastifex 08:04, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
I must agree with Usgnus, and disagree with Fastifex. A Google search for (negus ethiopia) yields 246,000 hits; a search for (negus wine) yields 231,000. This suggests that there's no primary topic, that "Negus" should be the title of the dab page, and that this page's title should carry a parenthetical disambiguation: I'd suggest "Negus (Ethiopian title)". — Ammodramus (talk) 15:23, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
