Dating: fourth century
[edit]"The recent re-edition of Philodemus' Academicorum Index has shown that Neanthes has to be put into the fourth century," observes Jan N. Bremmer, in "Attis: A Greek God in Anatolian Pessinous and Catullan Rome" Mnemosyne, Fourth Series, 57.5 (2004:534-573) p. 541. Bremmer notes T. Dorandi, La storia dei filosofi 1991 and Walter Burkert's comment "Die Lebenzeit dieses Neanthes rückt damit etwas weiter zurück ins 4. Jh," (Burkert, "Philodems Arbeitstext zur Geschichte der Akademie", ZPE 97 (1993:92), not following P. Borgeaud La mère des dieux 1996:66, who still puts Neanthes at 180 BCE. Just a head's up, as I'm frying other fish.--Wetman (talk) 23:05, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- Though I have edited lightly, I believe I've clarified this today: one Neanthes seems to have been alive in the 4th c. (active in the 3rd), another to have written about Attalus I in the 2nd century. Wareh (talk) 19:57, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
