Despite the reference cited about the Olathe reserve squadron deploying to Korea aboard USS Boxer, I find no supporting evidence. In the 1980s I helped compile a comprehensive list of all USN/USMC carrier squadrons and units that flew combat during the Korean War, and VF-774 never appeared in any of the ship or air group reports. The naval aviation history office accepted that material, and here's a link based on that research: http://www.gonavy.jp/CV-CV21f.html
Note that in 1950 Boxer deployed with Air Group 2, all regular USN squadrons. Therefore, the most likely explanation is that 774 provided some individuals to augment regular navy squadrons. I'd welcome any additional or confirming info.
