Ranking

[edit]

Since it is the largest UK building society, and there are only five banks with greater financial assets according to Banks of the United Kingdom, isn't Nationwide the sixth, rather than seventh, largest high street financial institution in the UK, or am I missing something? -- Bonalaw 12:45, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Abbey national was sixth until it was taken over.
Ah yes, that'll be it. Thanks. --Bonalaw 12:11, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opening paragraph

[edit]

Presently the opening paragraph reads: One of the major UK mutual building societies remaining today is the Nationwide Building Society, with headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire, South West England.

1) Aren't all building societies in the UK mutual organisations? To me, 'mutual building society' reads like 'unmarried bachelor', with the 'mutual' being unnecessary (and information that should be obtainable from the building society page.

2) NBS is clearly the largest building society in the UK by just about any relevant measure, if not all such measures. Why have it as only 'one of the major' UK building societies remaining when it is the largest building society in the world?

Thoughts and comments, anyone, before I make the relevant amendments? Matthew 13:25, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think 'one of the major' is meant in the context of original building societies, i.e. Nationwide is the last big one left, the only big one that didn't de-mutualise. I agree with the 'unmarried bachelor' statement, I beleive a building society has to be mutual by law (i.e. non PLC, hence why all the de-mutualised building societies that became PLCs didn't retain the name building society in their legal titles or brand names). -- thingiemajig - 26 July 2006
Point taken re the intent of 'one of the major', but the way it's written at present makes it sound as though there are other building societies that are of comparable size to NBS and also remain.
I know Halifax and Abbey were larger building societies before they demutualised; were any of the others also larger? Matthew 21:46, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

I am unsure of the dates for this but I first became a member of a building society in the 1950s. The society was the Hastings Building Society. At a later date it merged with (I think) the Preston Building Society (Lancashire) and at an even later date the merged society merged again with the Anglia BS. If anyone knows of those dates it will help to add a little more info to this article Peter Shearan 05:37, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From memory, there's a large 'family tree' at the old Anglian Head Office in Northampton that shows all the mergers through time and when they were. Matthew 07:03, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ISP

[edit]

Is Nationwide's ISP offering from the late 1990s worth a mention, does anyone think? And does anyone know much about it? Someone somewhere must have one of the installation discs still kicking around! :-) Matthew 11:18, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've got the installation disks in the loft, came on two 3" disks. It was pretty rubbish or accessing it over a 28K modem was rubbish, one or the other! QuiteUnusual (talk) 21:45, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not. Branded ISPs were ten a penny in the late 1990s, before broadband superseded their business model, and not very significant to the brands they used. Thelem (talk) 01:36, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
True. However, I have a recollection, perhaps false, that Nationwide was very early in becoming a branded ISP. Matthew (talk) 11:28, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Promoting itself

[edit]

I noticed that Nationwide Building Society IP added it's own URL to promote it's 'Sponsored By You' campaign: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=145649109.

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=155.192.35.8

Surely, this violates Wikipedia policy? --77.5.108.187 (talk) 03:57, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

also, the 'Society Spokespeople' section reads like a corporate 'About Us' page, and has probably just been copied and pasted. It includes references to 'our customers'. 79.77.97.146 (talk) 18:49, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Key People

[edit]

I agree with the editor above who suggested that the language red like the company's own words; i have cut out all except the most basic description of each person: Their job title. Checking other companies, such as RBOS, Alliance and Leicester, Tesco, and even Wal-Mart, that is the most that the equvalent, non-controversial people get. Cheers, Lindsay 20:06, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interest

[edit]

Not only was the Key People section overloaded, but the Interest section, though interesting (sorry!) is more suited to interest than this specific institution. Certainly we don't need details of how Nationwide calculates interest and their policies about it; that reads more like one of their brochures to interested customers. Thus, i'm gonna remove it. Cheers, Lindsay 06:46, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote that section. Unfortunately, Nationwide does not use a "standard" approach to calculating interest. Pointing someone at an 'Interest' section doesn't help as its a very basic, and unrealistic way of looking at it in enterprise terms. Working in that department for nearly 18 months, I can say that it is unlike many other financial institutions. For example, interest is calculated in whole pounds, is re-projected when interest rates rise and fall and calculated on a daily basis. Although you are correct with the leaflet being available, there are not many people who know how to do this on a daily basis for the entire organisations accounts. There were only about 5 or 6 when I left.
Since their "Interest Calculations" department's method is usually taught over a 5 day training camp and not computed (when disputes are dealt with), it is useful for the public to had an idea on how to do this, as it doesn't take up much space and is relatively easy to do.
If you want N/W to calculate it, the usual process is for you to write a letter, N/W will send you the leaflet and ask you to work it out, then send it back to them to prove it wrong. It is only when the complaint gets raised to the ombudsman or stages 2/3 (where 1 is the letter initially being sent and logged) where the calculation is carried out by hand.
I could possibly move this to a Nationwide Building Society Interest Calculations as a dedicated section.
As homework(!), see if you can find out, easily, any financial institutions method of interest calculation. I don't think you can without a phone call, a leaflet and a puzzled customer to can.

Nationwide International

[edit]

The link to the Isle of Man subsidiary is a redirect back to this article, and should be removed. An unregistered user has been adding it back in, but I don't think it is helpful to readers. Comments? --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 10:16, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep. I think it's probably fair to make a good-faith assumption that the user doesn't know either A) that that link is a self-redirect, or B) that we don't tend to link to self-redirects. And with that assumption, I think we can just revert the edits as good-faith-but-wrong. Dreaded Walrus t c 14:41, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Co-operatives UK

[edit]

Apparently Nationwide has just joined Co-operatives UK, so I've added it to the opening section. I can only find one mention of it via Google, but it is the Co-operatives UK website, so is probably correct. No mention of it on the Nationwide website, though. http://www.uk.coop/blog/linzi-nedoszytko/2012-04-11/new-businesses-join-co-operatives-uk 82.4.203.224 (talk) 10:11, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disclosure before editing

[edit]

The current page for Nationwide Building Society requires some updating; for example, some of the financial results data on the page is currently from 2008 and 2009. I would therefore like to make some updates and other changes for the benefit of readers.

The reason why I mention this is because I am an employee of Nationwide Building Society and therefore there is a potential conflict of interest. However, I will ensure my changes are as balanced and factual as possible and I will make references to publically available sources for the changes I make.

Please do contact me on my Talk Page if you have any questions.

Thanks

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Nationwide Building Society/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

==Start class assessment==

Great start to the article, very good references, and nice flowing prose in the lead section. Some things to bear in mind when working on improving the article towards and beyond B class are listed below. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:13, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • History: timeline goes back only to 1970, has too much detail
  • Coverage: look at articles for other mutual financial institutions for ideas
  • Area served: what parts of the UK have branches? how many?
  • Business - how many homes financed? other lending? balance of savings versus current accounts? any commercial or wholesale business?

Opening paragraph

I am an employee of Nationwide and so following the COI policy, please can you consider the proposed edits and update the Nationwide Building Society page. The information I'm providing is accurate, up to date and factual. The existing information i'm proposing to change is out of date and factually inaccurate.

Please replace "Nationwide is the result of over a hundred mergers, the most notable of which are its merger with Anglia Building Society in 1987 and Portman Building Society in 2007. It is now the second largest provider of household savings and mortgages in the UK and has a 7.7% market share of current accounts.

For the financial year 2015/2016, Nationwide had assets of around £208.9 billion [2] compared to £331 billion for the entire building society sector,[3] making it larger than the remaining 44 British building societies combined.[needs update]"

with the below

"Today’s Nationwide is made up of around 250 different building societies. Among the most significant mergers were those with the Anglia Building Society in 1987 and the Portman Building Society in 2007. It is now the second largest provider of household savings and mortgages in the UK and has a 10.3% market share of current accounts as of half year results 2021/2022. As at half year 2021/22, Nationwide had assets of around £285.4 billion[3] compared to £465 billion for the entire building society sector (as at April 2022),[3] making it larger than the remaining 42 British building societies combined."

CJK1979 (talk) 08:32, 17 May 2022 (UTC) thank you so for responding. All of the financial results we provide are independently audited. There is also a published history of Nationwide by Michael Cassell, called Inside Nationwide, published in 1984. I hope this answers your question. If so, would you be happy to update the factual and up to date content I have provided? Thank you so much, for engaging.[reply]
@CJK1979 Hello, I could not verify/find the £465 billion figure in the link you provided (I opened the PDF). Also, could you update the numbers now that the 2022 Annual Report] is out? Declining for now, please re-open the request when you have an update or can help verify the £465bn figure. Ptrnext (talk) 03:33, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
CJK1979 (talk) 10:30, 19 July 2022 (UTC) Thank you so much for your response. I have updated the figures to reflect the Society's most recent set of annual results. All the information can be found in the Society's Annual Report. @Ptrnext in response to verifying the the total assets figure for the entire building society sector, by adding up all of the building societies assets in the pdf you will find this will total £483 billion. On the 6 June 2022 Debbie Crosbie became the new CEO of Nationwide Building Society. Please could you delete this sentence 'On 22 May 2015, it was announced that the Society's Chief Executive, Graham Beale, intended to retire. On 16 November 2015, Nationwide announced that Joe Garner, CEO of Openreach, would succeed Graham as Nationwide CEO in Spring 2016.[12] Joe Garner joined the Society as Chief Executive on 5 April 2016.'

Thank you CJK1979 (talk)

I am an employee of Nationwide and so following the COI policy, please can you consider the proposed edits below and update the Nationwide Building Society History section. The information I'm providing is accurate, up to date and factual. The existing information i'm proposing to change is out of date and factually inaccurate.

Please would you be able to replace the first paragraph in the history section with the following: 'The Society's origins lie in the Co-operative Permanent Building Society, founded in 1884. Based at New Oxford House, High Holborn, it changed its name in 1970 after deciding to leave the British Co-operative Union. The new name was put to a member vote, with members voting 135,675 to 15,585 in favour.[5]'

In the second paragraph please can you change the year from 1992 to 1991. And then following this please could you add this new paragraph...'In 1992, Nationwide moved its head office to Nationwide House, Pipers Way, Swindon. It had been operating a computer centre and administrative office in the town since 1974 and head office departments had been gradually migrating to Swindon.'

Please could you replace the paragraph that starts...'Nationwide completed a merger...' with the following...'In 2007, Nationwide members voted at its Annual General Meeting to donate at least 1% of pre-tax profits to charitable activities each year. Nationwide completed a merger with Portman Building Society on 28 August 2007, creating a mutual body with assets of over £160 billion and around 13 million members. Portman's earliest component was the Provident Union Building Society founded in Ramsbury, Wiltshire in 1846.'

In the paragraph starting ...'On the 24 March 2009...' please could you add the words 'Building Society' after Nationwide in the first sentence.

In the paragraph starting 'In 2012...' please could the word society be capitalised. Could it also be capitalised in the same paragraph where is says..'divisions of the society'. At the beginning of paragraph ten, could 'society' also be capitalised. And please could 'the society' also be capitalised in paragraph 11.

Please could the following paragraph be added before the last paragraph of the History section announcing Debbie Crosbie as CEO. 'In 2017, Nationwide announced it would be building a new community at Oakfield in Swindon working in partnership with Swindon Borough Council. Planning permission for the 239 houses was granted in 2019. The homes will be EPC A rated and built on a not-for-profit model. In 2021 the development won the ‘Building for a Healthy Life’ prize as part of the Housing Design Awards.' For reference please see Nationwide’s Oakfield development wins coveted housing award”. www.nationwidemediacentre.co.uk. Retrieved 17 March 2022.

In paragraph 11 please could 250 be updated to 297. Our Annual report for 2017-18 states that it was 297 staff.

Thank you for your support CJK1979 (talk) 13:11, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It would also be helpful if the additions/replacements/deletions can be formatted using colors (e.g. green for additions; red/strikethrough for deletions/replacements). Thanks, Ptrnext (talk) 04:23, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for the formatting. So, I'm still not seeing an inline citation for the sentence that begins with In 1992, Nationwide moved.. The proposed additions that begin with In 2007, Nationwide members voted at.. and In 2017, Nationwide announced it would be building a new community.. would need independent secondary sourcing to be included, also some of it sounds a bit promotional, so I'll not be able to add them. The capitalization of chairman and chief executive are not needed per MOS:JOBTITLE. Thanks, Ptrnext (talk) 00:46, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
