This is a new page that I will need help to get the rules put together for Wikipedia use. I need your help on it. Any help to post a better understanding of the rules would be awesome! Thank you. NostalgiaBuff97501 (talk) 20:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Yet another junk sport
[edit]Good luck with your compiling the rules. Meanwhile, I'm continuing to marvel, after stumbling onto this silliness on NBCSN, at the lengths to which the ever-burgeoning American sports culture will go to concoct ridiculous competitions. It's a dumb sport to watch, and it doesn't even look like it's fun to participate in. This league's surely tiny ratings will be dwarfed by the WNBA, for Heaven's sake. I expect this league won't last beyond the middle of its second season. Sports are like gambling in America: its promoters are convinced there is never enough. But the society and culture would be better off if no one had ever thought of this nonsense known as "Grid". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.203.2.253 (talk) 17:57, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
Making pages for the teams
[edit]User:Yosemiter thanks for the help with editing. I think these teams will all pass the GNG since they have all been playing in nationally televised matches (ESPN in the US). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Locutus42 (talk • contribs) 01:03, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Locutus42: I will not stop you from trying to make them, just know you need multiple quality sources not from the NPGL itself. (Boxlife is not a high quality secondary source the publication itself is considered non-notable) If you can find multiple ESPN articles about the teams themselves and not just routine coverage (i.e. scores) then they would have a chance at passing WP:GNG. - @Yosemiter: How is national televised coverage of matches not "notable" enough? That seems a bit ridiculous. And correction to my previous comments, they are on NBC Sports.
- @Locutus42: For the same reason many individual CrossFit athletes and Ninja Warrior competitors don't have pages, they don't meet WP:GNG individually, even if the league or event does. Please read the GNG guidelines, but the short of it is that the individual teams must have specific, reliable, non-primary, non-routine coverage in order to pass GNG. I can help where I can, but I just can't find enough team specific articles that aren't made by the NPGL/gridmaster or just scores. Yosemiter (talk) 01:22, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Yosemiter: How many non-primary citations do you think are necessary to take the tag off? There are currently 6 secondary/tertiary citations.
- @Locutus42: Good job so far, in my opinion the league page probably passes now and the tag can likely be removed without repurcussions. But please note, I am not the judge, jury, or executioner on these matters, just an editor who works on minor league pages and many teams in low-level minor leagues often can't meet GNG so I am trying to give advice. As for the two team stubs you have worked on, you have but in a solid effort in non-primary sources but the only reliable source I see is The Baltimore Sun (although even that source could be considered WP:ROUTINE as it is an announcement of a signing and was included in a list of local team news). The rest are definitely what could be considered non-reliable (see WP:SOURCE) or a non-independent secondary source (see WP:PRIMARY). That would make the team pages questionable to Keep at best. I will give you some more time to work on them, but I will probably nominate them for deletion in a few days just to seek others input on their current notability. If the league makes it into the bigger picture sometime in the future this could just be a matter of WP:TOOSOON. Yosemiter (talk) 02:31, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Yosemiter: I guess I'm failing to see the logic here. The teams have televised matches on a major network, fan followings, people who pay to go see the individual teams compete, fan days where they do autograph sessions, and they sell entire lines of team merchandise from 3rd party sources. Most of the teams even have their own minor league ("farm") teams with an entire "Amateur GRID League" circuit with multiple regional divisions (Western Amateur GRID League, Southern Amateur GRID League, Northeast Amateur GRID League, and others). I don't edit here that often, so even after reading the guidelines, the standards for "notable" seem completely arbitrary. Anyway, thanks for the advice.
- @Locutus42: Being televised on cable channel division of a major network (NBC is major, NBC Sports as a channel is not even in many standard cable packages) is notable in this case, however, that does not make the the individual participants or teams notable. For questions on notability, I highly recommend reading all my previous links links as well as everything in WP:NOTABLE, especially the WP:GNG and WP:WHYN sections. @Locutus42: Also, just because pages are tagged as too reliant on primary sources it doesn't mean you can't use them as you seem to be avoiding them on the team pages. Primary sources are great for getting detailed and accurate information for sourcing your articles. The "primary" tag is just used to say that primary sources aren't enough to make a page notable. What Do They Do?
[edit]The article refers to roster rules, different "races" in the "grid," formats based on mountains, and similarity to crossfit; but nowhere does it explain in any way what any of the athletes do on the "grid," how the sport is scored, or any actual specifics of the contests.
