This year the index for National Merit semifinalist in Florida was a 215 index. Last year the cutoff was a 214 index in Florida.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.11.20.41 (talk • contribs) 22:14, December 3, 2005 (UTC)

sentence
[edit]"All Finalists receive a Certificate of Merit in recognition of their outstanding performance in the competition. Generally, Semifinalists who fail to advance to Finalist standing do so because they do not submit the application, have a large discrepancy between PSAT and SAT scores, have atypically low grades for a high PSAT/SAT student (i.e. not at least mostly A's and B's), or do not receive the endorsement from their school."
As the writer admits, this is a generalization. Count me as one person who met the above criteria and was rejected to be a finalist. (A classmate with worse grades than me made it to the finalist stage). If you ask me the requirements are fuzzy and the selection process is mysterious. I don't think the quoted sentence is accurate, and even if it is, its too vague and certainly can't be backed up with statistics.

[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to 2 external links on National Merit Scholarship Program. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}}
after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}}
to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:
- Attempted to fix sourcing for http://www.laurenlake.com/nu/

Andrew U. D. Straw National Merit status
[edit]Andrew U. D. Straw has been added to the list of notable Merit Scholars by a possible WP:SPA, without any credible evidence. This same editor has recreated an Andrew U. D. Straw article after it was deleted back in 2005.
The only "evidence" of Straw being a Merit Scholar is a claim by Straw on his online c.v. The authoritative source on Scholar status is the National Merit Scholar database, and Straw is not in it.
The editor claims without evidence that Straw isn't in the database because "NMSC does not list all 15,000 each year. Straw's National Merit Scholarship was from C-Thru Ruler in 1987." In 1987 there were only 7959 Merit and Achievement Scholars nationally, with 139 in Indiana. Corporate-sponsored scholarships, such as the alleged C-Thru Ruler scholarship would be, are included in those numbers. Straw's Northridge High School has produced 18 Scholars, all named in the database, and Straw is not among them.
Even if Straw actually were a Merit Scholar, he hardly rises to the level of notability of the others on the notable Scholar list. Cptmrmcmillan (talk) 19:07, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- I found relevant documents to put to rest what the doubter said above.
- National Merit Finalist Letter
- C-THRU RULER CORPORATE NATIONAL MERIT AWARD LETTER
- After being a National Merit Scholar, Straw did many notable things, as you can see on these two links. If you just don't like him, fine, but facts are facts.
- Straw's legal work and personal and media profiles:
- [1]http://profile.andrewstraw.com
- [2]http://all.andrewstraw.com
- CV: [3]http://www.andrewstraw.com
- Straw is a Democracy Chronicles columnist:
- [4]https://democracychronicles.org/author/andrew-straw/
- He was featured by the American Bar Association's Disability Rights Commission as a disabled lawyer who is an asset to the profession of law (Month of January 2014)
- Democrats Abroad created a profile about Straw:
- [5]https://online.fliphtml5.com/grtws/arko/#p=1
- He was elected by Triple Nine Society and served on its Executive Committee. Membership Certificate.
- There are many Wikipedia articles about people who have done less.
- Since this Wikipedia page is about academic talent and implicitly the SAT, it is relevant to note Straw's SAT, GRE, LSAT, and ASVAB scores, all of which can be found on page 56 of http://all.andrewstraw.com and this includes evidence of Straw's elected leadership in Triple Nine Society.
- ASVAB 99 test composite score: 99th percentile of all test takers. SCORE REPORT
- SAT 1410 (V680 M730): 99th percentile of all test takers. SCORE REPORT.
- GRE 2220 (V700 Q760): 99.9th percentile (allowing Straw Triple Nine Society membership since 2003) (TNS minimum scores). SCORE REPORT.
- LSAT 165: 93rd percentile of all test takers. SCORE REPORT.
- Those are notable scores, several in the very top possible percentile ranking. Add this to the National Merit Finalist document and National Scholar status due to the NOPA/C-Thru Ruler scholarship and you have notable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by
