The link to Ricahrd Bell is incorrect - if he was the chair from 1902-3 then linking to a chap born in the 1950s doesn't make sense.

Article Title is too imprecise

[edit]

'National Executive Committee' is a generic title for, well, a national executive committee, which many UK voluntary organisations have (eg the [National Union of Students], most Trade Unions). Surely this article need a rename? Perhaps Labour Party National Executive Committee, National Executive Committee of the Labour Party, or similar? I'll submit a move if we can find consensus on a good title. Ariehkovler (talk) 13:32, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this. Another alternative is National Executive Committee (UK Labour Party). "National Executive Committee" feels like it should be disambiguation page. Jonjonjohny (talk) 08:28, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Party Chairs

[edit]

This list currently gives the Chairmen of the Labour Representation Committee from 1900-06 and then the Chairmen of the Parliamentary Labour Party from 1906-15 (though AFAICS Henderson retained this post till 1917). I'm not sure where John Hill in 1916/7 comes from, except that he was President of the Trades Union Congress in the latter year. From George Wardle in 1917 on, the list gives the Chairman of the annual Conference.

I propose to alter the list so that it gives the Chair of the annual Conference throughout. It would therefore read: -

Chairmen of the Annual Conference of the Labour Representation Committee

Chairmen of the Annual Conference of the Labour Party

From George Wardle in 1917 onwards, it would follow the current list.

All information taken from 'British Political Facts 1900-1994', Butler & Butler 1994.

Thoughts?

Your sources seem excellent, so I'd go with it. My only comment is that the current rulebook has the name as "chair of the party", not just of the Annual Conference; do you know when the title (and role growing to also chairing the NEC) changed? It would be useful to note that if we can. Rwendland (talk) 22:58, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added a list of conferences (and Chairmen) to Labour Party (UK) Conference before looking at this article - using the 2000 edition of British Political Facts, but there appear to be some gaps - see Talk:Labour Party (UK) Conference#20c conferences. They were made in July 2010, and I subsequently linked various names and improved formatting. I've now reverted your edit. Please check before removing material! Warofdreams talk 16:20, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Celebs?

[edit]

Not to be trashy or anything, but could we have a list of celebrities who have been on the National Executive Committee (Tony Robinson, Eddie Izzard)? Were they the only ones? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.162.253.101 (talk) 23:23, 12 December 2018 (UTC) Well I can join in the 'name celebs formerly on the NEC' game with Michael Cashman.[reply]

National Executive CommitteeNational Executive Committee of the Labour Party – The current title is ambiguous. There are a number of other bodies called "National Executive Committee": the National Executive of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress and the National Executive Committee for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing all have articles. There are sections titled "National Executive Committee" on the pages Scottish National Party, Plaid Ifanc, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Disaster Management Act, 2005; and national executive committees discussed on National Caucus of Labor Committees, African National Congress Youth League, Socialist Educational Association and a lot more organisations.

It's a generic term that shouldn't be the title of an article about a specific national executive committee. It fails WP:PRECISE. National Executive Committee of the Labour Party is as precise as it needs to be and no more, whereas National Executive Committee (UK Labour Party) or National Executive Committee of the Labour Party (UK) are too specific because we want to disambiguate the body from other national executive committees, not from other national executive committees of Labour Parties. It's also more natural than National Executive Committee (Labour Party). Ralbegen (talk) 15:54, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Recent NEC vote

[edit]

I wonder if this addition is really due? The NEC have made hundreds of decisions, reported on in RSs, over the years, so there seems no reason to give this any particular prominence. See also WP:RECENTISM, WP:NOTNEWS, WP:TOOMUCH. BobFromBrockley (talk) 16:51, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I entirely agree. The history should be about the committee rather than decisions made by it, otherwise ther article's scope would be silly, especially with this level of detail. It would be nice to have more prose in the article though—just so long as its relevant and encyclopaedic prose! Ralbegen (talk) 19:02, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries Bobfrombrockley and Ralbegen, have no issue with the reversion of my edits. I just wasn't sure where to put the information about the Labour Party's decision in July 2021 to ban four alleged far left groups. Fortunately, that content has found a home in several articles including the Labour Party, Labour Against the Witchhunt, Antisemitism in the UK Labour Party, and Socialist Appeal (UK, 1992).
